Default Has your ham ever made you ill?

A couple of days ago, I came down with what I thought was a cold. So apart from food and water changes, I have pretty much stayed away from Marnie.
I've now been told that it's probably Adenovirus. When googling this, links about rodents came up. I couldn't find a definite answer but I'm wondering if I've got something from her pee or poop.
I'm now concerned if she might be carrying something. She seems fine, apart from her bum looking blocked again.

I would think it unlikely that your ham is the cause tbh, it is a fairly common virus that you could have picked up almost anywhere, if you use normal precautions like washing hands after handling or cleaning getting anything from a hamster is unlikely really.

It is extremely common, especially in children - it sounds like a form of cold virus really. It is highly infectious though, so it is more likely that your hamster is at risk of catching it from you than the other way round So yes best to avoid him completely for now - if you have to do his food and water yourself daily, then a good handwash first in antibacterial soap (some are antiviral as well - Carex jhand wash is good). I have never yet heard of anyone catching anything from a hamster - it is usually the other way round.

From what I've read, you're more likely to get adenovirus if you have a low immune system, so have you been run down recently? Hope you feel better soon x

There are many many viruses out there - the common cold is a virus and so is flu - and various types in between. No treatment - you just fight if off eventually. Unless you have a cough for more than a couple of weeks and then they might give antibiotics in case it's become bacterial.

There’s a lot of cold and flu viruses going around cornwall right now so you most likely caught one of them tbh

OK, thank you everyone. I just hope I don't give it to her. I am doing the bare minimum with her, which means no out of cage time unless I get someone else to do it. I feel terrible but better that than get being too close to me.
