I'm not sure about the patches. It could well be that when her pain meds wear off a bit she feels some discomfort and as she can't quite work out what it is she may be scratching or nibbling at her side. Called referred pain when you feel it somewhere else because the nerves are sort of connected.

Thanks both, she's on tramadol aswell now just in case it's that, the spots don't look great though also looking at her wound, been looking great but the end looks a little red and like maybe she's pulled at it... It's not major it could be just how it's healing, hard to say..

Could stress make her hurt herself?

I suppose it’s like babies - they scratch at things and you can’t explain to them. Is she still on antibiotics? That should prevent wound infection.

Yes she's on loxicom, tramadol and baytril twice a day.

She lost a bit of fur when I scuffed her, first time that's ever happened Idk how it did tbh, I checked the skin it was fine and just pink healthy skin, two days later its like the patches on her sides, so I think she's overgrooming the areas? They become like a weird scab, hard thing, very hard to explain and really get a picture they just look pink like her skin, but feel very different it's such a shame, she made it through the op so well but I don't see how we can keep her going like this, when the pain meds start to wear off she holds her back left leg up, the one with the worse sore on it

I'm meant to see the vet Thursday, but I might try get a sooner appointment as I don't see how we can leave her like this

I am so sorry. Is she eating at all now? You could maybe try her with a bit of baby food that she can lick up. The Cow and Gate 4 months Pumpkin and Chicken has always been popular with our hamsters. If she will eat that you could put the pain meds in it so less need to scruff her as often.

She is bound to be stressed after her op and being scruffed etc so she may well be overgrooming. Do you give the Metacam and tramadol at the same time or different times of day? It could be an idea to give the Metacam in baby food - at lunch-time, then put the tramadol out in baby food in the evenings - so she tops up during the day. It may also be impossible to increase the dose of Metacam but you'd need to ask the vet about that. I think if these sores settle down she could pull through.

Any of the 4 months age baby foods are fine as long as they don;t contain onion or tomato or citrus fruit - most of the 4 months ones don't. Grandpa's sunday lunch is popular here too.

I just put a tiny amount of baby food (pea size) - you can use a lid of a baby food jar for it as a separate dish you take in and out - and put the drops of med on it and mix it in a bit (I use a skewer to mix in the tiny amount). Then the jar of baby food keeps a couple of days in the fridge to be used again. Although if you use the lid from the first jar you'd need to put cling film over the jar top.

Anything she enjoys eating is fine. The Dog food is working very well for the Baytril here! I will have a few pouches of it left over as Nugget finishes his Baytril tomorrow - I can post them to you if you want.

I give all three meds morning and evening, I tired putting them in porridge, baby food, and that dog food you suggested, but she wont eat it all even tho it was a tiny amount, she is eating and drinking normally but she's really fussy, she's never really been into treats so it's really tricky tbh my vet said I could do the tramadol 3 times a day, but tbh it's not really possible, we aren't home and also scruffing her an extra time that day wouldn't be nice

I'm seeing the vet tomorrow now, so I'm hoping she'll have some suggestions, but last time she didn't even know what the sores were It's such a shame she's a resilient little thing

I have been staggering the meds in food. Putting the baytril out in the dog food at lunch time. Just a tiny pee sized amount. That's usually eaten by tea-time. I then put the pain meds out in a tiny pea sized amount of fruity or chickeny baby food - that doesn't taste bad like the baytril and is well disguised. That gets licked up overnight.

The other day I gave 3 separate meds as have started with probiotics too. So it was

Meaty dog food in Baytril 12pm
Metacam in baby food 5pm ish
Probiotic in a different baby food at bed time.

Because they eat such tiny amounts they won't eat a larger amount all in one go. Our robo eats the dog food in two goes. He eats the first bit straight away and the second bit later but it's all gone by tea-time so he's getting the Baytril.

The baby food is easily licked up and more watery.

If you put all three meds in one tiny bit of food it maybe tastes too much of meds?

Might be worth staggering them like that/above.

The stress of it all makes them worse and it has really helped me being able to put it in food.

She must be nearly finished with the Baytril now isn't she? How long were you supposed to give it for? If that has finished and you only have the two to give, I'd give them separately in food, staggered. Just in something really tasty like the baby food - I have never known a hamster not eat the baby food Much tastier than porridge Unless it had Baytril in then the flavour isn't strong enough to disguise it but it would be fine for Metacam.

If she's finished the Baytril and you can give the pain meds in food twice a day, staggered out, she'll have chance to settle and get over the stress and may start feeling happier and a bit better.

She is doing really well and she could well improve now if she gets chance to settle.

My Vet said if they didn't get all the metacam in one go (in food) it wasn't so crucial - it was the regular full dose of Baytril that was crucial.

I think getting the pain meds in baby food - even if spread out over a few hours, is working here xxx

My problem is i'm just not home enough, we do all meds at 7am and 7pm, I worry that she'll not eat whatever I hide them in then be in a lot of pain So at least with syringing them I know she's getting the full doses, the one painkiller wasn't enough so now she has the two.

I took her to the vet earlier because I was worried about her, my vet thinks it's a bacterial skin infection as it's spreading, she's given another another antibiotic to give her and took a skin culture, so hopefully within a few days we'll know what it is. Until then it's 4 syringes twice a day xxx

7 am and 7pm is fine. I would try putting at least one of the pain relief meds in some baby food. Put out at 7pm. If it hasn't been eaten by bedtime you could syringe her then with it. But she probably will lick it all up if it's tasty - much more interesting than hamster food.

You'd think wouldn't you! She just tends to lick whatever it is once then leave it much to my frustration. She'd be in an awful lot of pain if she didn't get them so I don't wanna chance it. If it was my other hammie he'd mug you for it :P

Heard nothing about the skin culture yet, but whatever it is, it's spreading more and more Also when would you give a wheel back after a spay op? she's going nuts without it D: my vet said the end of the week at least (so now) but also didn't sound all that positive about giving her it back.. but she's like digging the edges of her tank and looks like she wants something to do she used to love her wheel
