From what I understand, with Pyometra it is always either spaying to cure, or pts. There is open and closed pyometra - one type can be treated with antibiotics but not always successfully and there is the suffering to take into consideration. I think the type she has must be the type that needs spaying as that is what the vet has suggested.

There is always a risk with anaesthesia for hamsters so they have to tell you that, but most do fine with anaesthesia - there are plenty of hamsters on here who have had ops. Our Syrian had a small whiff of it aged 2 years and a few months, for tooth burring and he was fine - but that was only a small whiff.

Shame she doesn't like the Metacam. For the Metacam my vet had suggested making jelly - measure out the amount of liquid jelly you've made into an ice cube square (she suggested a matchbox lined with cling film but I thought that was a bit big). Put 10 doses of the Metacam into the little bit of liquid jelly you've measured out and mix it in well and put it in the mould/ice cube square/matchbox. Then when it's set, cut the jelly square into 10 equal pieces. And give her a tiny bit of jelly as a dose each day.

Our last Syrian wouldn't touch the Metacam either - if I tried to disguise it in baby food or anything else, he rejected the food, so jelly might work.

Or the food Vectis suggested - the same as for the Baytril. My vet said jelly wouldn't work for the Baytril as it tastes nasty.

Pyometra is always very serious for female hamsters. It is a hard one to weigh up. By giving the Metacam and antibiotics now you'll be relieving any pain she is having, but if she is bleeding or has something going on inside she will get weaker.

Hard to weigh up for you.

But it comes down to a tough decision - either to help her on her way to avoid suffering (because it is apparently very painful for them when it takes hold), or have her spayed to get rid of the pyometra or it returning and let her live out her life - and some of it is uncertain xxxx

There is some info about pyometra here. Although it sounds like it may the "open" type from the description, further down the page it describes some of the unpleasant things that can happen in either type when it progresses.

Pyometra in hamsters
I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your support and info, I did read it

The bleeding got worse and I decided to have her spayed, she was spayed today, and I was sure it was the last time I'd see her.. but the vet just called and she's alive

Apparently her uterus was enlarged.. they said they could send it off, but Idk if there's any need? anyone have any thoughts on this? I need to discuss more when I collect her.. but it's just hit me I have no idea what to do, I just looked at some posts on here and they suggest removing all toys and wheel and climbing stuff so i'm going to do that now, shall I get rid of all the old bedding? And put fresh in? and just lots of nesting material and food and water? I don't want to stress her out, but there's sand and blood in her bedding (i'm going to remove her sand bath) so I'm wondering if I should clean her out.. or if it's best to just remove some stuff and keep her smell?

I'm so pleased to hear she's doing well!

I've not had a uterus sent off after a spay in my girls. Sometimes my vet saves operative samples and then asks me - as it's easier to save them then discard them than to not take them but want to send them.

My advice on caring for hamsters after surgery is here: https://vectishams.wordpress.com/201...after-surgery/

I wish her a speedy recovery.

I'm glad she has come through the op. I can't see any benefit in sending it off for pathology as that will be expensive and you likely would just treat her the same anyway whatever it said. We would normally house in a small hospital tank during recovery. Use clean bedding like tissue only as you don't want sand or shavings sticking to her wound. Don't give her a wheel or climbing toys until she has healed up. She may like a miller spray to nibble and a few toilet roll tubes to run through for now. They are better with a water bowl as they struggle to stand up to drink from a bottle if poorly. I;d also offer some soft food like porridge and babyfood as well as her normal mix. The vet should give you some painkillers for her. They can recpver quite quickly. Wishing her well.

So glad she has done well after the op. You've got excellent advice about how to house her until she recovers. If you don't have a small cage that would do as a hospital cage, then a large pet carrier might do for one night - if she is in a large pet carrier! Or a plastic storage bin? I had to get a hospital cage for our older Syrian once and nipped out and got this one because it had a front opening door. The wheel removes easily. I believe the Ferplast Mini duna is used as a hospital cage sometimes as well.

You could maybe put one or two tubes or toys from her old cage in so something smells familiar. Just looked at Vectis's link and it seems a storage bin would do

Do keep us posted and wishing her a full recovery.

Ah thank you They tested a small blob of urine on her and said there were traces of blood in it, I'm hoping it was just contaminated as there was obviously blood all around that area... but carrying on with the baytril for another week anyway and pain meds for 5 days, post op check in 3.

We completely cleaned her tank, she just has a deep layer of carefresh, with a torn up tissue on top and a few kitchen roll tubes, food and water. Going to give her some porridge after her meds in about an hour. Thanks

Great. Hope the meds are going well. Our robo is on Baytril and Metacam at the moment as well. The Metacam seems easy to put in anything tasty. The Baytril he is taking well mixed in a tiny bit of Country Hunter beef dog food, that Vectis recommended, and he eats every little bit of it

That's the only thing I don't have she's in her normal tank, but everything is up one end close together, so i'm hoping it'll be okay she's sleeping now

Ooooo that's an idea! I've just been syringing it... D:

Do you have a dog? Coz I don't currently, would a pouch keep? I'll happily buy some just not sure how wasteful it'll be
