Default Eyes half sealed

Hi everyone,

My hamster Annie has recently been coming out of her house with one or both eyes half sealed. We haven’t changed anything that I can think of like bedding or flooring so not really sure what is going on. She is acting normally and is always able to clean her eyes so that by the time she comes out in the evening they are fully open but it’s been happening every day for a week or two and I don’t know if it’s a problem or not. It’s her right eye more than the left but they are both affected sometimes. My partner says that as hamsters get older this stuff happens but she is only just over a year old so I don’t know whether he is right or not.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you all

She's not old so I wouldn't think it's an age related issue, if she can clean them herself & they are opening it may be ok. If it continues to happen it could be a mild infection, you could get your vet to check her if you're concerned.

It could potentially be sticky eye. The best way to describe sticky eyes is basically like to us waking up to sleep in our eyes. It is more common as the hamsters age.
Although would recommend that you observe closely and if it begins to get worse best to see a vet to see if it could possibly be due to allergies or s potential eye infection.

The same thing happened to my dwarf hamster. I just used a mixture of a tiny amount of salt with warm water, and wiped his eye with a tissue everyday and it went away.
