Default Re: Get or Avoid?

I was going back and forth last night, which do It would be better, what am I going to do about the water bottles and keeping her claws down because I've taken the granite out. I ended up on the Rodipet site, as you do and totally changed tack with food and have order the Rodipet Junior. I know it's light on protein but I will give her extra. I have meal worms and shrimp. I bought some, I think it's freeze dried, chicken today, its for dogs but it says 100% chicken under ingredients. Is this ok to give her and if so, what size piece? I also want some nuts and seeds. Could I give her ones from a weigh your own shop or are sealed ones from the bakery aisle better? I also was a bit extravagant and got 2 of their water bottle/bowl holder things which is on granite. Im hoping , please tell me if it's not the case, the bottle and bowl would break her fall a bit should she fall, so she would land straight onto the granite but also that there is some granite there for water bottle drips and keeping her claws trim. I hope I haven't messed up.
Thank you for reassuring me about her antics. I was concerned she could get stuck.
Serendipity, it is indeed the same house you have got but don't worry, I saw pics of your house ages ago and copied yours. The only problem was, I forgot to take into account that your cage is a bit wider. Lol. Good job I checked as I had to pull off the one leg and add it somewhere else. It's balanced on the lip as best it will, not as much as I'd like but it's ok, it won't fall.
Thank you all again. I'd be lost without you. Your knowledge and help is invaluable. I hope one day I can give back.

Oh that's great! Yes it's a fiddle fitting them in! I haven't use that water bottle and holder from Rodipet - I think the only issue maybe if it fits on top of the house without being too tall. But you could always pull it to bits.

Honestly I would wait a bit until she's had a couple of weeks to settle in and not worry about nails and drips just now

Sometimes just looking at these things for a while and seeing how she uses them, gives you ideas. I was more nervous about fall risks with an older hamster from the top of the cage onto say a bendy bridge at floor level. A fall onto a shelf isn't far and fine - especially for a younger hamster.

Our Syrian only climbed the bars the first couple of weeks until he worked everything out and hasn't done it since - I never worry about him falling because I know what he's like now

Apart from anything else there is always the option to fix a little ledge at roof level over the thing you are worried may be fallen on - I've done that in our robo's cage.

The Junior rodipet mix is good. I didn't know much about freeze dried chicken for supplementing protein but found this. I got this one (a couple of them) because it didn't have anything added or preservatives or salt eg and some of them did. It starts to smell funny after a few weeks when the packet has been opened but it did go a few weeks per packet.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I tend to give pumpkin seeds as treats or extras as they are woofed down! I just get them from the supermarket. I also get sunflower seed kernels from the supermarket as treats/extras, and walnuts and brazil nuts and cashew nuts (nuts are extra protein too). I get all the human grade ones just to be sure and although they're not huge packets they last for ages.

I don't mix extras in wiht the hamster mix but put them somewhere else in the cage so he expects a treat there! And scatter a few pumpkin or sunflower seeds occasionally.

I didn't even think of height to be honest but I think it will be ok as they are just the teeny bottles.
I've put the litter tray in, possibly I shouldn't have as she will know it's different. She's asleep in her 2 quid ceramic jar though! Kids and boxes come to mind.
I do have one of those straw mattress type things that i was planning on attaching to the ceiling of the cage so she couldn't climb and fall on the tile but it made it so dark so I left it.
That chicken looks good, I'll get some next time I place an order.
I've just fed her and changed her water. I couldn't remember if I'm supposed to do it when she's asleep or when she's awake. I chose when she's asleep as I hoped it would scare her less. I've given her the food I had which isn't what she had in the shop so I hope it doesn't upset her tum.

That all sounds good
I think the rodipet food will be a good choice, not all syrians like mealworms or shrimps but she may do, there are a few different types of freeze dried chicken around but as long as it's just plain chicken that's fine for extra protein, not sure about syrian size pieces though.
I have one of the rodipet things for a bottle & bowl, the granite base is really nice, I didn't like the bottle holder much as I just thought the bottle moved too much when a ham tried to drink from it but the bowls are great, all my hams have had rodipet bowls for years now & they do well with them.
I agree that you don't need to worry about wearing claws down just yet, you can add things in later to help with that if need be.
I always think it's better to be a bit over cautious about falls with young hams as they can be a bit silly with all their exploring but your cage looks fine to me, I don't think you really have anything to worry about.
I wouldn't buy anything from those open weigh your own things, nuts especially go rancid quickly when exposed to air & you really don't know what else they may have been exposed too, with nuts sealed bags are best.
Feeding & doing water when they're asleep is probably best for the first few days but once she starts to get used to you being around feeding time can help with taming/bonding so you can do it when she's awake.

Thank you Cypher. Good to know that I seem to be doing things right. I was wondering if I could stick the water bottle holder into the base so it doesn't move around.
I keep talking to her so she can get used to me. I've put my hand in with her a couple of times, she has got a little braver but not brave enough to take the treat from me. Unfortunately, I won't be able to tonight as she's gone back to bed after both times she's been up.

It's not the bottle holder moving that I meant sorry, the bottle is loose in the holder so when they lick the ball bearing the bottle just kind of lifts up a bit which I think makes drinking a little more difficult for them, if she seems to be managing it ok then I wouldn't worry about it too much.
It's still early days so don't worry about it taking a little time for her to gain in confidence, she's still settling in.

That's not good! Might be easier to just use a bowl.

This is completely your choice of course but if you look at it this way, most people would have been instsntly turned off by this and this makes her less likely to be adopted.

If you can give her a nice home, even if she isnt guaranteed the best health at least she can be happy

Even the unfortunate deserve a second chance, i dont think she should be avoided, but consider giving her a loving home, theres no reasom she wont live a life as long and good as any other hamster

Sorry for late reply, been having some technical issues.
Thanks Cypher, hopefully got it all sorted now.
TsukiCatHammy, I did call P@H to check on her a couple of times and she was adopted by someone else.
