Unhappy Blood with urine

I have a female Syrian hamster who is about 12/13 weeks old. She seems to be a healthy, active hamster but when I came home from uni today I noticed that her pee corner also has some blood in it. It doesn't seem like a lot but it did worry me as I didn't think hamsters had periods - at least not noticeable ones.

Is this something I should worry about? She seems perfectly fine right now and I can't see anything different in her behaviour. I've since cleaned the corner out so I can tell if this happens again. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think you should definitely take her to the vets - I don't know what it could be but as far as i know it isn't normal

Hamsters don't have periods, they go into a heat every 4 days which may have a bit of discharge, but blood is not normal.

I'd get her to the vet tomorrow if you can. She could have pyometra (which is a womb infection) or even a kidney or bladder infection. If you catch it early, there is a high chance of it being treatable.

Good luck!!

Oh no, poor hamster! Try to get into a vet by tomorrow.

I think it could be one of the following, but I'm not a vet

Hamsters can suffer from bladder or kidney infections. The most common symptoms are excessive urinating, blood in the urine and excessive drinking. Other symptoms may include squealing when urinating and listlessness.
A hamster with a bladder or kidney infection will require antibiotic treatment by a vet to cure the infection and will need to be kept warm.
Hamsters that are fed a poor quality diet or a diet high in fat content are more susceptible to developing bladder infections as this causes the urine to become more alkaline.

Or

Hamsters that are suffering a bladder/kidney infection could get the following. Aspergillis Fungus develops in the area of the cage where the hamster urinates. The fungus then grows on the urine patches in the cage and releases spores which then affect the hamster. The fungus can be seen as white and then black in colour in the area where the hamster urinates. Once affected by the fungus spores the hamster becomes lethargic, has difficulty breathing and may have itchy or inflamed skin and sometimes chronic diarrhoea.

I've also heard that they can get gallstones. Either way get your hamster to the vet as it will most likely need antibiotics. I wish you and the hamster the best of luck

Hope you are able to get an appointment with the vet. Make sure you tell them about the blood in the urine and any other changes you have noticed. Good luck

There are no other changes. She enjoys a very balanced diet and her cage is thoroughly cleaned after 5 days. There are no changes in her behaviour. Indeed, if I had not seen the urine then I would've assumed she was doing completely fine. I'm going to wait a day before I look up a vet. It may just have been a scratch after all!
