My Hamster died today :'(

Hi guys,

I regularly come here for tips and advice but thought I'd become a member today as I'm really upset about my Syrian Hamster passing away suddenly this morning. She was fine yesterday and then around 2am I went to change her bedding and she didn't come out of her bed. When she came out she was slumped to one side and crawling and looked like she couldn't see. I kept her warm and gave her food and took out her wheel etc.

Before I called the vet this morning I went to her cage and she had passed away. I checked if she was hibernating. I'm so upset as she had a big enough cage, the right bedding, safe toys to play with and had no problems at all until last night. She was only 8 months old and my little friend. Thanks for all the advice on this website guys, I'm sure your influence helped give her the best life possible

I am sorry to hear of your loss

It is all the harder to lose a young hamster. It could be a number of things but most likely some inherited disorder that has just given out as she reached full adulthood. Often we just never know what happened. Treasure your memories and remember that her short life was filled with love and happiness.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it is very hard to lose a hamster so young & unexpectedly, as souffle says when this happens it is usually something genetic or congenital that you couldn't have known about, it's natural to think that maybe you could have done something different to prevent it but I'm sure that's not the case.
You filled the time she had with you with love & gave her a good life, take comfort in that.

Awww! I’m so sorry. Please accept my condolences. Just like people our little friends sometimes get gravely ill and pass for seemingly no reason due to health issues that aren’t fully understood. But what an awful, crushing feeling it gives and empty place it leaves us! Hang in there and perhaps when your heart is ready look for another hammie to invest your heart in. Rest In Peace, little friend.

It's always hard to lose them so long, many of or memebers, including myself have experienced this. Treasure that extra special time you had together x

So very sorry - your hammy was so young. It sounds possibly like a stroke - as the others say it could be a genetic predisposition. Hamsters don’t actually hibernate - it’s a bit of a misnomer. The can go into torpor if they get too cold but rarely come out of it - so not quite like hibernation.

Don’t let it put you off having another hamster - it is terribly hard and sad when this happens but maybe think about getting one from a breeder or a small local pet shop where the breeding can be better than from large chain stores.

So sorry for the loss of your little ham. I'm sure she had a wonderful and happy life with you. You sound like like a very caring and kind person, which are wonderful qualities to have as a ham parent should you wish to give another special ham a loving home x

I'm truly sorry about the passing of your precious hammy. What was her name? I'm sure she had a splendid life with you, filled with nurturing love and tons of good times. It is so heartbreaking to lose a ham so young, and it is hard not to ponder why it was her time. As other members have said, sadly we often never know the cause if it happened so suddenly and unexpected. Regardless of the cause of your beloved hammy's passing to the bridge, just remember in your heart that you did everything you possibly could for her and she had the greatest life ever with you as her loving and caring parent. She was your very special friend, and she loved you. Cherish the treasured memories you created together and know that she will live on in your heart always. We understand what you are going through, and we are here for you. Huge hugs.

RIP, dear little one. Have fun and many adventures at the bridge. You will never be forgotten.

Thanks guys for the support I really appreciate it, Ruby was her name and I've now put my name down on the list in my local pet shop for a new hamster. I think it was a stroke as some of you mentioned. Thanks again guys
