Exclamation Freezing does not kill bacteria

I’ve seen a lot of posts recommending freezing hamster food, toys, etc to remove bacteria, however freezing doesn’t actually kill bacteria but instead it becomes dormant until the item is defrosted. After which, the bacteria will reactiviate and continue to spread.

Instead items can be disinfected using hamster safe cleaners or if possible by boiling or heating in the oven (around 75-100c) for atleast 15 minutes.

I just wanted to let people know since this is a common misconception in general as well as in the hamster community.

I only freeze items to kill insects and bugs eggs - usually I will recommend freezing wooden items as well as sanitising - as I had issues with moths when I bought some hamster things online. Then stick in boiling hot water with discinfectant in to sanitise.

Thanks for posting this as I remembered that I had missed something out of my post I typed earlier as was in a bit of a rush.
Plus also like to add to this thread - don’t boil or bake rocks as it extremely dangerous as natural rocks could have air pockets inside which once heat can use the rocks to explode. Just place in hot water with discinfectant.

I never knew rocks could explode! Thanks for adding that because I plan to collect some rocks for my hammies tomorrow.

This is what I read when researching how to sanitise rocks when I came across fish forums which said they could explode/or crack if boiled - don’t know if it 100% true couldn’t find anything conclusive so didn’t want to risk it myself - although not all rocks are likely to explode/crack if heated I always think it best not to risk anything like boiling and baking rocks as it could be dangerous or harmful. And if a rock cracks it would make it unsafe for hamsters anyways.
Then read just scrubbing them with discinfectant is good enough so decided to stick with that opposed to chancing anything dangerous.

Just to add the freezing needs to be at least a week to kill moth eggs. It's the only reason I freeze food and other items after a nasty moth infestation lasting months!

I've also heard that baking is best for sanitising but was never sure for how long at what temperature and imagined things would burn!
