Exclamation Is this eyeball bulge? Do I need to take my ham to the vet?

I noticed a bit of a difference in my hams eye, she's about 10 months old.

I've filmed a short video of her, can you let me know if I need to take her to the vet, or am I just paranoid?

Thanks so much!

The video is not working on the forum. If you have noticed a change or something that looks not quite right then it is best to have it vet checked for peace of mind.

I can't see the vid either, you could try posting a link rather than embedding it, that might work.

Can’t see the video either but hamsters eyes can be all different sizes and kevels of ‘bulging -ness’ so its hard to tell with out seeing the before as well But I agree with Souffle and Cypher, if you’ve noticed a change in her eyes you should take her to the vets asap because it could potentially be caused a number of serious issues so itks best not to take the risk.

I too can't see the video. I agree with what the others have advised.

Here's the link to the video, sorry for messing it up in the 1st post

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB2h...ature=youtu.be

She got prescribed Baytril, 0.01 ml x 2 per day, we're 2 days in. I'll post a video from today, but it looks quite similar as of now.

They eyeball is definitely very bulgy. It could be glaucoma that is not uncommon in these type of dwarf hamsters. It usually needs steroid drops pretty much for life to control it. Did the vet suggest this at all?

Oh wow, you're in WY too! I'm in Leeds.

I think the vet suggested it might be 3 things, the bacterial infection being most likely.

Edit: The vet said it's not a simple infection (like conductivitus?) if it's pushing the eye out, the infection might be behind the eye she said (retrobulbar abscess). She did mention glaucoma.

She said that if it doesn't improve after a week of antibiotics, a CT scan might be an option to see what's behind the eye, but apparently it's a more expensive option and extreme in her opinion.

She said that they have vets who have previously removed hamsters eyes with success, but I hope it won't come to that. Artemis got weighted and she's at 50 grams.

Yes it can be caused by an abcess or even a tumour behind the eye especially as it appears to only be the one eye that is bulging. I would probably try the steroid drops next to see if that takes it down should it not respond to antibiotics. Yes we are near Holmfirth WY
