Is it a bad idea to put radiator on? What Temp is TOO hot?
Hi all,
Might be a strange question as its getting colder, but my hamster is in a small room and i have a temperature monitor in there, i keep the door closed at night and put a tower underneath the door to stop most draughts (not sure which way to spell it, im aware there is a board game spelt like that!), last night the lowest temp was 15.1C.
I want to try putting the radiator on 1 line, for tonight, but im paranoid that it will get Too hot in there.
What temp is TOO hot?
I can't imagine it being like 40c or anything, but with the door closed and it being small room i'm just paranoid. (her cage isnt right next to the radiator or anything)
Is it a bad idea to turn the radiator on?

Best temperature range in a hamster's living area is 18-25C. Tucked up in a nest full of torn up toilet tissue could see them tolerate one degree cooler. However, I personally would never let it drop to 15. Sounds like you need the radiator on.

Re: Is it a bad idea to put radiator on? What Temp is TOO hot?
Agree 15 degrees is a bit cold. The radiator won’t be on all night so it should be fine. I sometimes turn the radiator off in the hamster room and instead have a little oil filled radiator on a timer plug so it comes on and off when I want it sea rate from the rest of the heating. It can get pretty cold at night when frosts start so I set it for a could of hours in the middle of the night too. Probably no need for that yet. Although we did have some snow the other day. Does your radiator have a thermostat knob on? You can turn them down - although they don’t work that well and with ours it’s either on or off. If your heating is on say from 5pm to 10pm I can’t see it would get too hot. 20 degrees is ideal. I doubt it would get hotter than 25 degrees. But what you could do is get a little room thermometer - they sell them for babies. I’ll link the one I have. To answer the question yes hamsters can get too hot but it’s unusual in the uk! In very hot summer weather they can get too hot but in winter I’ve found they love it when the heating is on and it’s nice and cosy - makes them come out more. Both our hammies sit basking and looking laid back when it’s nice and warm. I’d just leave the radiator in, not bother to block the draught under the door and get a little thermometer. They can die if cold. It happens a lot in winter - a hamster going into torpor (like hibernation) and they rarely come round again.
