Old and poorly hamster
My dwarf hamster has gone old all of a sudden.
And she's struggling to empty her cheeks and her eye looks infected.
I help her empty it by gentley rubbing it forward. But she's still struggling.
Any advice for how to help empty them better?
Also her eye how can I clean it up?
I work in a hospital so can get bits.
I've heard saline on a cotton bud, what about hibbi scrub very diluted?

Just saline - hibiscrub would be too strong, even diluted. For the saline just about half a teaspoon of salt to a pint of water and let it cool to tepid - only just warm. If she still has things in her pouches they may be impacted and then a vet visit would be necessary.

If her looks infected then I would take her to the vet, an infection could have an impact on her pouches too, the whole area could possibly be painful & she may need antibiotics.
I agree about just using saline to clean the eye nothing stronger.

Good point. The infection could be affecting the eye and the pouches. A vet visit would be a very good idea - saline will help soothe the eye in the meantime and clean it up.

Ok I'll grab some saline from work and warm it up in hot water for her eye and book a vet appointment in the morning once I've napped.
Hopefully they can see me in that day for her.

Went to vet today, managed to get a few bits out but she freaked out too much and nearly went off. She's too frail for anaesthesia.
Recommended to see how she does overnight at home. Give her no seed mix just small amounts of soft food, baby food like, so nothing else goes in pouch.
Have an appointment tomorrow for follow up.
She seems ok, eye better, I'm leaving her in quite warm room for her to settle and sleep.
Leaving in travel cage, it's not a tiny one, till she wakes up. Then I'll see how she is.
