Re: Ear infection?!
As of 27th October, Charming is on Baytril and Metacam for 14 days, with an appointment on the 10th for a check up.
Vet suspected a bad case of mites being the main concern causing the ear concern. Put a spot on treatment on and Charming has ceased over grooming (not that I even noticed he was, I feel bad!). No other signs of improvement as yet, today I noticed he looked very frail and quite hard done by, but I've got to give the medication a fighting chance. Will keep updating as and when (if nothing else, but for my own sanity right now as my cat also has ear concerns- again >.<)

Re: Ear infection?!
Hope the meds do the trick & he's soon better Gemma, it may take a while so try not to worry too much if improvement seems slow.

Re: Ear infection?!
Alrighty.
So, Charming has been on medication for a week and as yet there is zero change. If anything he’s looking worse. One week to go as he’s got an appointment on the 12th for a check up & also Killian will be joining him because he has black growths coming from his nails. One of which is literally doubling in size overnight, every night. The vet I spoke to didn’t sound very optimistic about either of them and I’ve been told to expect to not come home with either of them next week.
So I’m going to spend this week getting as much together time with each of them as I can and expect the worst next week but hope for the best. Although I’ll admit, I haven’t got my hopes up very high. Neither of them look very well. Considering they’re from the same Pets at Home (I wasn’t given a choice where they were from, my Dad’s wife arrived at my door with them) litter, this doesn’t surprise me, but, this may be where I will stop owning hamsters and I will just focus my time and energy on Effy, my cat until I find a breeder local to me with a far better reputation.
I’d get a Syrian but I haven’t got the cages suitable nor do I have the funds to purchase everything again to suit a Syrian. Maybe I’ll go Roborvoski. I’m not sure.
One thing I do know, is that Pets at a home are getting the biggest complaint of their lives. Three out of four hamsters I’ve had from there have been poorly, one died very young. I’m not sure it will help the cause to get them to stop poorly breeding and selling hamsters, but I’m certainly going to try my best to get word out. I’ll admit when I got Pixie, my first, I was uneducated with their ways, but funny enough, despite getting a random lump that healed on its own, she lived the longest. So, somewhere I did get something right I guess.
Anyway, I’m rambling. I’ll update this when I know what’s happening where, until Monday.

Re: Ear infection?!
I am so sorry both your hammies are having such problems. I hope the vet can manage to sort things but if it turns out they are beyond treatment then it is hard but maybe for the best.
What cages do you have? I don't think there's much difference in size for a cage for a syrian and a dwarf really, although large cages tend to work better to fit Syrian toys in easily and allow enough space as well. Robos also need plenty of room but a set up with plenty of overhead cover. Our robo is in an 80 x 50 cage which is also fine for a Syrian.

Re: Ear infection?!
Anyway today is the vet day so a hard time for you xxx If you are thinking of getting another one, maybe check out pet rescues - they have younger as well as older hamsters and will have had any issues treated. I often think if they've survived as far as a pet rescue they must have healthy genes.

Re: Ear infection?!
I have IKEA Billy hack cages, Serendipity, slightly smaller then the recommended but the hamsters are in their playpens most of the time they are awake. I wouldn't put a syrian in the cages I have. Vets isnt until next Monday but I'm going to spend this week with them as much as I can and give them the best week possible just incase I don't get to bring either of them home xD x

Re: Ear infection?!
I'm sorry to hear that Charming and Killian are still poorly. Hopefully their condition improves and they will recover to full health soon. I hope all goes well at the vets xxx
