Help Me, Poorly Hamster
Hey, My little Syrian Hammy is called Rex, and I love him very much I rescued him from a boring sad life. He has a wonderful life now of yummy food and lots of exciting things in his home he is friendly and has never bitten.
Recently he’s been quiet and I thought it’s because it’s getting colder and he’s getting ready for the winter but this morning I noticed a yellow scab looking thing under his chest/chin it’s got a little black scab in the yellow parts and this morning it was a little bloody. I’ve searched the internet world for help & he hates me looking at it. I tried to investigate to take a picture to try explain but it’s impossible. Some info he is almost 3 years old
Please can somebody help?

Re: Help Me, Poorly Hamster
Hi & welcome to HC Dpsmith.
It's hard to guess what may be up with Rex without a photo, do you think it's possible he's rubbed on something or caught himself on something that's got a bit sharp? It could be something like that or it may be a growth of some sort.
He's a really great age & I can understand that you wouldn't want to stress him but if he's up to it I would get your vet to have a look & take it from there.

Re: Help Me, Poorly Hamster
I'm sorry your hammy is so poorly. He is quite old for a hammy and at this age their immune systems are not so good and they tend to get infections.
That looks like a nasty infection there and it could be an abcess or even a tumour that is breaking down. I would take him to the vets and see what they say. It may be treatable with some antibiotics or it may be that he is in pain and you have to make a decision based on your love for him. I hope he can be seen very soon x

Thank you for your love & support.. I’ve spoken to a vets and been told to salt water bathe his wound and I’m taking him on Saturday to get antibiotics if the salt water isn’t working. I’m so sad I just want him to feel better he’s like my little baby. He doesn’t seem like he’s in pain but I don’t know the signs that show he’s in pain. He’s still being a little piggy eating everything and he’s drinking water, the only difference is that he’s not as active in his cage but it’s much colder here so I will just have to wait and see
Thank you again ❤️

Re: Help Me, Poorly Hamster
If you can find an exotic vet in your area they will give a diagnosis Three years is very old for a hamster so I don't think they'd be wanting to operate for any reason - it would be more a case of relieving symptoms and pain relief. Hopefully they will give you good advice and if they can treat you could ask about having some Metacam for pain relief as well. He's about the equivalent of 120 in human years He sounds like he may be fading now and nearing his time. I hope things go smoothly for you and him xxx
