Unhappy LESSON LEARNT. I feel so bad.

After the other day & pip falling down the stairs i should have learnt my lesson, i was cleaning her cage out & her ball snapped in half again.

she escaped through a hole in the kitchen,I had to call my dad home from his girlfriends, he took all the wooden sides off- nothing.

she had escaped through another hole through where sink goes, bu this point i was a complete wreck, shaking and crying, i must of called her name 100s of times.

I got her in the end, O M G. I thought she was lost for good.

I really feel like i don't deserve to keep her, do you guys think i should put her up for adoption?

:'(

Of course you don't need to put her up for adoption. Accidents happen but I'd advise you to bin that ball and don't get another one! I'm not a fan of hamster balls as I feel hamsters go nowhere in them. They are just in a plastic ball that there is no escape from. I would get yourself a big plastic bin playbox that she can go in when you are cleaning and make sure it is escape proof! A smaller cage or carrier could also be used as a safe place for her to stay while you clean her out. Playtime must always be supervised at all times and don't take her anywhere where she could get down a hole or out a door. Ours love to play on the bed and climb up pillows and under the duvet. You can only give her the best you can give and as much attention as you can so know you are doing your best and don't beat yourself up about it.

Of course you deserve your ham! This is in no way your fault, accidents do happen. You are a good owner because you care about your ham and are concerned. People who are not good pet owners will not care or be concerned about it. It always very hard when your ham is lost, there is so much stress involved. Souffle gave great advice on why not to use a hamster ball. The balls are poorly ventilated and they are normally to small making a hamsters back arch which can leave to arthritis and other back problems. A playpen in much better. You can go in your tub and lay a fleece blacket down (if you do not have one, you don’t have to put a blacket down). You can sit in the tub with them and put a few hides in. This is a great binding activity and gets some energy out. Please don’t beat yourself up about this.

She is quite clearly an expert at cracking open balls! I reckon they know. I had a very secure ball but the lid still came off if it bashed into something. Charlie actually worked out how to get the lid open while he was sitting quietly in a corner in his ball.

I wouldn't use one to be honest. And during cage cleans you can't keep an eye on them - I always used to put Charlie in his pet carrier when I was going to be spending some time doing something to his cage (if it was during the day) and he'd just go to sleep. Newt doesn't do that and clamours to be out so he goes in a play cage (and still clamours to be out! But at least he has something to do in there).

A ball is useful just to transport them safely from one room to another I think - ie you carry it (carefully) with the lid on - because carrying them by hand is not safe either - they can wriggle and jump out of your hands. But if using one they do need absolutely constant supervision and only to be left in it for 10 or 15 minutes at a time or it can get stressful.

Anyway I'm with the bin the ball consensus! A plastic bin would do as a play cage, as souffle said - eg for when doing a cage sort out. For general out of cage time a playpen area is much better - until they're tame enough to say have on the sofa with you. Newt gets lots of sofa time but he's very tame and also quite sensible (never jumps off - although latterly he's been getting braver at thinking about it!)

Very glad you got her back Just tell her your sorry and you'll get something sorted. If you've got solid floors then a hallway in a house can be a good out of cage area - providing you can block it off at one end and no holes in the wall!
