Default Hamster with grey reddish patch around eye.

Hello, I’m posting this concerning about my dwarf hamster who’s about 5 months old. I’ve noticed that he might have sticky eye or an eye infection . This happened when I changed his previous bedding which was critter care natural ,a paper based bedding mixed with green kat litter(also paper based) and toilet paper to aspen shavings. I didn’t entirely changed it into aspen but I just added it in to his previous mixture. I have found out a few months back that he was allergic to carefresh confetti and he had fur loss back then but was completely healed after two weeks. I stopped using it . Did the aspen shaving have anything to do with his eye infection ? I’ve replaced it with toilet paper now , hopefully his eye gets better.
I have a picture if anyone wants to see it I can email it to u.

Sorry to hear your ham has a problem with his eye, if it is an infection then it probably doesn't have anything to do with aspen unless there are any bits that could get into & hurt the eye, an infection will need treating with antibiotics so best to see the vet, if it's just a sticky eye then you could bath it with cotton wool & cooled saline or just water to see if that helps.
If he seems to be sensitive to different substrates then it may just be best to stick to paper based substrate to be on the safe side.
If you have a photo it might help us see what the problem is.

Thank you for advice ! But I still suspect that Kimchi(my hammy) is allergic to aspen as I found that he was ictching quiet a lot and have some fur loss around his tummy area which was what I experienced when he was on carefresh , I know it isn’t mites because I applied some revolution for him ( recommend by a vet I visited when he was having some fur loss). I also have another Syrian hamsters using aspen but she is completely fine with it . I have inserted some pictures before and after I switch to toilet paper. Hope this helps

The one with him on his saucer is the after picture.

His eye does look quite sore in that first photo, it's hard to see too well in the second one but if you think it's an allergy & it does improve with a change of substrate then that's fine.
If it isn't completely better very soon though then I would still take him to the vet.
He's a very cute little guy

My oldest Russian hammie also has very sensitive skin and can’t have wood shavings because he’s allergic. When he has an allergic reaction, his eyes get sore and red, his skin develops an eczema-like rash and he starts losing his fur.

I can only use tissue paper for him right now as even fitch and carefresh is causing a reaction now he’s older and weaker.

Update: Kimchi lost some weight and his fur seems thinner than usual.
He’s still active as usual and drinking and eating but his itchiness hasn’t stopped yet . His patch around his eye seems a little bit better. I work part time at a vet clinic but it’s too bad they don’t specialize in exotic pets. I will observe him for three more days and if things get worse I’ll take him to the vet again. I really hope he recovers soon and stops itching. Does any have a rough estimation when he will stop scratching if he recovers?
My other hammy (syrian) is always fine with the bedding tho.

If this was due to an allergy then you would see improvements pretty quickly, the weight loss is a concern & doesn't sound as though that's allergy related.
It could still be a mite issue, you do need a proper course of treatment from the vet if it is that but I wouldn't advise treating it yourself.
What are you feeding him? It's possible there's an underlying dietary issue or nutritional deficiency.
I would try to get an alternative substrate too, toilet tissue alone isn't enough. Kaytree clean & cosy should be ok if he's sensitive.

I applied some revolution (Selamectin) for him two days ago , it was recommended by my vet so I don’t know if mites is the main cause for his itchiness. He’s currently on a versele laga hamster nature and cunipic complete diet. As I live in Malaysia it’s hard to find hazel hamster or Higgins sunburst here. I’ve changed his bedding to critter care natural (which was what he was using before and had no problems with it) and toilet tissue (we don’t have Kaytee clean n cosy here sadly) .As for his weight loss, I’ll start monitoring his weight .He is currently 61 grams.

Switching back to the substrate he had before should show if it was an allergy issue or not soon enough.
I know it can be hard to get the best foods where you are so you're probably doing the best you can for him, I don't know the cunipic complete diet though so can't really comment on that, can you get flaxseed (linseed)? If you can I would give him a little pinch of that each day with his food, that should help with skin/fur condition generally.
What about fresh veg, does he have those? If you can work up slowly to daily (if he's not used to them) then give a good variety of fresh, ham safe veg each day, only a small piece of one thing each day but vary it as much as possible.
He's still a good weight so unless he continues to lose more I wouldn't worry, best keep a check on it though.

I did give him some flaxseeds and he seems to love it. Hopefully his itchiness stops soon.
