Unhappy Re: Hamster with grey reddish patch around eye.

Update: Kimchi’s weight still maintains at 61-62grams , he’s eating less though but when I feed him some mealworms(his favorite treat) or veggies he will eat it.i found out that the neck area and his face area have major fur loss and he’s still itching a lot. I reapplied some revolution for him yesterday but I’m worried I might overdose it as I applied it last week.i also changed his bedding to shredded white paper and tissue CAuse I’m worried of another allergy attack. I also found out that my furniture from ikea(made from pine might have been one of the fur loss causes but when I removed him from my room four days ago he still itches until now . I’m at the end of my wits on what could have caused him to have fur loss. Is he possibly allergic to the new food I added two weeks ago ?
My sister will be taking him to the vet this Saturday so hopefully the dr can find some answers to my questions.

What you describe as itching - is it just washing and scratching at his face? I have seen this in hamsters with eye problems and our vet said it was due to a chronic eye infection that caused the tear glands to be affected and secrete more sticky tears which do not lubricate the eye properly. The tear duct becomes blocked and so the tears cannot drain in to the nose anymore so they spill out over the face and cause the irritation you are seeing. Maxitrol drops can help but these are only used short term as they contain a steroid. We ended up using human eye lubricant drops daily (Isothalmic eye drops) to keep the eye lubricated. I wouldn't use any more mite treatment till you see what the vet thinks. There should really be a 2 week gap between treatments.
Many hamsters live with (and in) Ikea furniture so I'm almost certain it is not this.
Did this start with the new food? If so I would return to the old food right away.
Sometimes the eye issue is a symptom of something else going on inside like a hormonal problem or imbalance or diabetes other organ insufficiency and some of these problems are not treatable. I hope you get an answer on Saturday.

He’s not only scratching his face , he’s also scratching his underbelly and bitting his arms a lot. His neck part is also furless but I can’t really get a picture as he squirms a lot . Do you know what’s the cause of chronic eye infection so that I can avoid it in the future ?i really hope it’s not a serious case amd he can be treated .

The eye problem in our case was due to an infection causing changes like scarring and degeneration of the tissue in the tear glands and ducts. I guess it is a bit like chronic sinusitis in humans. You can't do anything to avoid except what you are already doing in avoiding allergens but bacterial infections can come from anywhere and are much more likely to flare up in a hamster with a weakened immune system due to an issue elsewhere. I would ask the vet to do a urine test to check for diabetes.

May I see some pictures of your hamster when they had chronic eye infection so that I can have a reference to it. Thanks :’) As for the eye drops, can sterellized saline solution be used to lessen the irritation until he goes to a vet or does it have to be isothalmic eye drops ?
