When to euthanize
Hi, I don't often come on here but would be grateful for advice. My Syrian hamster who is approximately 1.5 years old looked very shaky and wobbly last night and today is wandering round her cage and lying down flat then wandering again. I think she is dying. I really don't want to put her through a trip to the vets. When is it OK to let a hammy pass away naturally? I don't want her to sufferer. Thank you

Re: When to euthanize
Hello. It does sound like she may be ready to go. Is she still eating and drinking at all? Does she seem hunched? Being hunched is a sign they are in pain. It doesn't sound like that - it sounds like she is looking for her final place. They often do leave the nest and find a place to die. Just keep talking gently to her and offer her the odd bit of food - maybe on a teaspoon. If she is no better in the morning and is not eating and drinking then think again maybe. I was told they will often give you a sign when they need help to leave. But if she went say a week without eating or drinking it may be kinder to help her on her way.
I agree though, at the moment it is better just to leave her and give her any little comforts you can.

Many thanks for the advice......she is still going to her bowl but wouldn't take treats. Yes, I think that's a good plan.

Re: When to euthanize
I think they just keep going with their normal habits. Our hammy also did that. All the while she is carrying on with eating and drinking I would just let things take their course. She may be old and in her twilight time but if she was really suffering you would know.
