I took in a wild baby dove that kids were trying to get. And it flew into one of my hamsters open enclosures and he's gone. I sobbed. He was only 3 months old. The bird flew in his cage yesterday and today he's gone. Did the bird cause it. Could it spread disease to my other hamsters, rats, or mice? Or dogs?
Please please urgent

Re: What diseases can wild birds give hamsters
I'm really sorry for the loss of your ham.
I think just about all wild animals can carry diseases that can be transmitted to hams but I don't know of any specific ones a bird may carry, as this happened so quickly I think it may have been due to shock rather than disease of any kind.
I would just monitor your other hams, rats & mice closely just in case but they should be ok.
I would also make tops for any open top cages as soon as you can, it's never really safe to have open top cages for numerous reasons.

I would guess this was due to shock as well. Did the bird land on him or flap at him with its wings? It could have caused an injury. Wild animals can carry many diseases which can affect hamsters however as cypher said not this quickly. It may have been a sad coincidence or shock or a fatal injury.

Ok. The bird did not land on him or near him. He landed in the opposite corner of his cage and the bird didn't poo or pee in his cage. About 24 hours later he passed. I put the bird outside and it escaped.I'm really worried about my other animals especially dogs because one of them sniffed the bird.

Re: What diseases can wild birds give hamsters
He could have possible just been extremely stressed out from the multitude of new smells. He could possible almost feel like he was in a brand new cage with brand new toys and everything smells like a birdie! Now that, that would be really stressful to a ham.
Also did your ham go near the bird before the bird went away?

I wouldn't worry about your dog having sniffed at the bird, dogs go in areas where wild birds are all the time without problems so they should be fine.

Re: What diseases can wild birds give hamsters
I have had him since he was born. He had new smells all the time. I have so many animals that I'm sure he smells them all. He saw the bird swoop in and woke up and went to investigate but before he got close i scooped the bird out. My poor baby....

Wow. I honestly believe it may be because he wanted to investigate. It must have happened to fast for him to even take it in! That's most probably it then.
