Hamster pee smells bad
I noticed that Ziggy’s (my male Syrian hamster) pee has been smelling really bad, normally it doesn’t really smell of much but now it’s really stinky! He has a big cage with Fitch bedding, he poops normally, he pees the same amount of pee, he’s drinking normally but I have very recently changed his diet from pets at home hamster musli to Harry hamster mix. The first time I noticed it I could smell it in loads of different places but now it’s just the sand bath area ( I don’t know if it’s getting better or he’s only peeing in the sand bath. He also looks perfectly fine and is acting normally.
Could this be caused by the change of diet or is it something else that I should be worried about.
It also might just be that the bits he peed on is the sand and some of the nesting (ripped up toilet roll).
Any help?

Re: Hamster pee smells bad
I'm sorry that his pee smells worse right now. Sometimes if you change their diet is may cause their pee smell to change a bit. I would just see if the scent of his pee gets less stinky soon. If it still smell bad or you are concerned, it may be good to have him see a vet just in case since sometimes the bad odor could be caused by an infection that you are unaware of. Best of luck and I really hope that Ziggy will be fine and the smell is better soon.

Re: Hamster pee smells bad
It's probably because he is using the sand as a potty. If he is only using that then the sand is not absorbent so the smell of wee is more obvious. You might be best to spot clean the sand daily and scoop out the wet sand. It may be the change of food but I have never found it does that myself. Older hammies often wee more so he could be getting it wet more rapidly hence you smell it.
If you think he could have a urine infection though then a vet visit would be in order for a check over.

Re: Hamster pee smells bad
Update: Ziggys pee smell is slowly starting to return to normal! Like you said it was probably the sand and maybe the diet change but also I only really cleaned the bowl once a month and I sived and removed soiled sand everyday but I didn’t replace it :/. Now I know for next time!
