Question My Hamster suddenly died. Only had her for 2 months.

Hey guys. I’m new here. My name is Alyssa. I joined because my Syrian Hamster died after I only had her for 2 months. I got her from PetSmart.

She lived in a 40 Gallon Breeder Tank with a mesh lid (to protect her from my cat)
I used CareFresh confetti bedding
I changed her water every single day
I fed her every single day. I can’t think of the name of the food but it was the same little pellets that the store fed her.
She had a wheel, a hideout, several wood chews, and some little wooden toys

She did not have a sand bath or a potty

The only thing I can think that it could be is maybe my house is too cold? I keep it at around 65 to 70 degrees. She always seemed okay with it and never felt cold to the touch.

The day she passed away she was running on her wheel that morning like usual and then she drank some water and burrowed under her bedding to go to sleep. Normally she comes out in the afternoon to play but she didn’t. And then I checked that night and she wasn’t breathing and she was very stiff. I’m so sad because I loved her and feel I did everything I possibly could. I probably could have cleaned her cage more often but Idk what else I could have done. I want to get another hamster eventually but not if I’m a bad hamster mom. Does anyone have any idea of what could have happened or what I could have done differently? Please help.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
It's not uncommon for a young hammy to sadly pass away. Usually the cause is something they have been born with such as a heart defect or a weak blood vessel in the brain which suddenly gives out and leads to a sudden death. There would have been nothing you could have done to prevent it and it sounds like she had an amazing short but happy life with you and was much loved.
It's best not to overclean new hammy cages as they need to get their scent around them so don't blame yourself over that. It was nothing you did.

I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss. Although your ham had a short life, it sounds like it was full of so much love and care from you. Unfortunately, some hams have health conditions that they are born with and you wouldn't have any way of preventing this very sad and heartbreaking outcome from occurring. You sound like a very loving, attentive, and good ham parent, and your little one was very lucky to have had a wonderful home with you. My heart goes out to you during this emotional time, I hope it helps give you comfort to know that your hammy knew love and her passing sounds like it was a peaceful one as she passed in her sleep all cozy in her nest. Hugs to you. RIP, little one. May you have grand adventures at the bridge.

I'm so sorry to hear this. It makes you feel so awful doesn't it to suddenly lose a pet. It wasn't your fault and she was loved and well-cared for during her short life. Lots of love to you xx

I'm so sorry for your loss. You cared for and loved her very much and it wasn't anything you did, so please don't blame yourself. Like souffle and dreamtree1234 said above, it could have been an underlying health condition. I hope you find comfort in the fact that she felt very loved during her life.

RIP little one x

it sounds like your hammy had a lovely 2 months with you. Very sorry for your loss Just remember that your little hammy is over the rainbow bridge eating sunflower seeds to her hearts content. Cold temperatures wouldnt cause death in a hammy, just hibernation. They will wake up if warmed. That being said, your house was an OK temperature. 40 degrees is when hibernation is prone to happening, and even then they do not pass away, just sleep. I dont think it was the temperature at all! It is very sad that due to disease some of our lovely critter friends leave us too soon. It sounds like she passed as she slept warm and cozy in her nest. You must have loved her very much, and I'm sure she knows. Lots of hugs xx

I'm so sorry - it's always hard when they go but particularly when young. As Souffle said it's often a genetic thing when this happens when they're young. You did a good thing not cleaning her cage out too much. With something the size of a 40 gallon breeder it really doesn't need it very often at all. I tend to find if you leave it long enough they'll do a bit of a clean up themselves And pile the stuff they want out in a heap.

Also the temperature sounds fine. So sorry for your loss. Don't let it put you off getting another hamster when you're ready. Big stores do tend to get hamsters that have maybe not been bred with good breeding practices but I know getting a hamster from a breeder can be quite hard in the US. Sometimes smaller pet shops have their own breeder.

So sorry for your loss, I myself have had hammies pass to the horrible disease of wet tail, but as others have said it could also be a genetic defect. You should sanitise the cage the best you can if you do look into getting another hammy (just to be on the safe side, if it was wet tail the new hammy could contract it just from being in the cage) and possibly look into getting the new hammy from either a trusted breeder or a small pet shop, big companies often inbreed their small furries in order to meet customer demand, which inevitably causes genetic health issues. Your little girly will be running on the big hamster wheel in the sky
