Default Squeaking while sleeping

We have a vet appointment tomorrow evening but just wondering what may be causing this.

My hamster is a male Russian dwarf and he is around 2 years and 1 or 2 months old so he is elderly.

I noticed a couple of nights ago that he was making little squeaking noises in his sleep. The noises sound in the same rhythm as his breathing. When he wakes the noises stop completely.

Otherwise he seems well, he has been waiting for his food, happy to come out and play, drinking and I’ve heard him rattling around in the night.

He’s quite visibly old now, he’s lost some weight and looks quite aged and is a bit stiff at times but he still seems bright and happy.

Any ideas?

Squeaking in their sleep is actually quite normal for Russian hams, not all but many of them do it, it does seem a little odd that you only notice it now though, if he seems fine otherwise I wouldn't worry about it really.

Reassuring to know it can be normal, but I’ve had him two years and not once has he made any noise! Sometimes it sounds a bit like clicking.

Have you changed anything, substrate, nesting material or anything like that? Or has he changed his nesting place or habits so that you might be hearing something you couldn't hear before?
If it was a respiratory issue I would expect you to be seeing or hearing signs of that when he's up & about, not just when sleeping.
One of my Chinese boys squeaks in his sleep & I must have had him for almost two years before I heard it but I realised that he just hadn't blockaded his door like he normally does so I was able to hear it!

No, nothing at all has changed!

Thankfully the vet couldn’t find any problems either so we’re just to keep an eye on him and if he develops other symptoms I will take him back. Perhaps he’s just started snoring like a little old man

One of my Chinese dwarfs started squeaking in his sleep in his old age. He didn't seem distressed at all, it was just a random thing as far as I know! His brother doesn't do it.
