Default Teeth injury

Hello.

I adopted Willow about 11 days ago and I cleaned out her cage today. When I put her back in, she was chewing the bars and I must’ve startled her because she pulled away and her mouth was stuck. She was squealing and her mouth was bleeding but she freed herself. It was terrifying.

I rushed her to the emergency vet, who has given her a 24hr painkiller injection and she’s now back home in her cage. I can hear her making little noises but she won’t touch any food or drink.

The vet said he thinks she has broken her tooth which seems likely but he couldn’t get to see in her mouth very well.

Does anyone have any experience with anything similar happening, or is there anything I can do for her? I’ve left all the normal things in her cage and she’s now in her bed up the corner.

More importantly, is there a chance she can recover from this? I’m devastated that this has happened so soon after having her.

Thank you. X

It all depends on how badly the tooth is damaged, if it's just the tooth itself that's broken then it may well grow back & be totally fine, if the root has been damaged it may not grow back or may not grow back straight & if the teeth aren't aligned properly then they don't wear down & need clipping or burring regularly.
For now just keep an eye on how she's managing with food, if she can eat ok & doesn't lose weight she's probably fine, you could try giving some soft food like porridge or ham safe baby food while she's recovering if she struggles to eat normally.

Thank you for your reply.

I asked the vet about baby food and he said no, just to give her normal food but that seems like she won’t be able to eat. He seemed a bit unsure to be honest, so I’ll see if I can try her on a bit of porridge later. She’s pretty traumatised - as am I.

I can imagine how you feel, it's a real worry & scary when something like this happens but fingers crossed she'll be fine.
I would give both normal food so she has it if she can eat it & some soft food too for now & see how she does, even if she can eat her normal food a little soft food won't do any harm for a short while.

I think I’ll try both. She’s just had a little walk around. Her mouth looks a bit swollen on the one side. I think she really pulled back on herself. She hasn’t touched anything I’ve put for her.
I really hope the painkiller helps her and she can try a little food. I’ve put her water in a shallow dish too.

It’s such a worry - I feel terrible.

Thanks again for your help. X

I got up this morning and she hasn’t moved from her bed. I’ve tried offering her bread in milk but she just turns her head away. Her face looks a bit beaten up on the one side now.

She doesn’t seem in pain but I’m really panicking about her not eating or drinking. I’ll try to leave her in peace for today and see how she is tonight. Do you think it might be the painkilling injection that’s affected her as well?

Sorry for all the questions. I know that the people on here are so experienced though. X

I don't have any experience with hams having pain injections but I wouldn't be surprised if it has knocked her out a bit, the stress of it all will probably knock her back too, I would just let her rest for now, see if she will take any water if you offer it to her but not worry so much about food for now, see how she goes throughout today.

No need to apologise for asking questions at all, hope she'll be feeling better by tonight.

She’s in a bad way. Still not eating or drinking. Got up to have a wee in her corner though bless her. I’ve arranged with work to take her to the vet again first thing tomorrow. She really looks in the wars now. Her face seems more injured than I thought. This is such an awful things to have happened.

I just hope and pray that she can recover. X
