That's really good news that Bailey is doing so well herbi, he really is an amazing little guy!
I hope it continues to go well & there aren't any teeth issues underlying his problem, fingers crossed for him.

Thanks cypher. Do you have any experience of teeth issues in elderly dwarf hams? A bit concerned this morning that despite bouncing back so well he has scratched all the fur off his jaw again. Something must still be hurting him despite being on painkillers. It's starting to drag on too long for my liking!

I don't have any experience of anything relating to teeth with symptoms like this, the only thing I've had is an elderly Russian who's teeth just stopped wearing down & had perhaps become misaligned somehow, he just stopped eating & lost weight, other than over long teeth there weren't any other symptoms but I'm sure there are other issues that could arise, it would be a bit of an ordeal for Bailey to have to go back to the vet & have his teeth checked properly I'm sure but it might be for the best, although he's doing so well I do agree with you that it seems to be going on for a long time & that is a worry.

Thanks cypher. Yes it is a worry. Another lump has appeared, under his eye again. I really think it must be impacting on his quality of life, he's only had one day each week when he's felt like running on his wheel which is when one lump has gone and before the next one has come! He's still eating well but yesterday his behaviour was a bit odd again, he was running about in a bit of a weird way and seemed confused and agitated. All this started when I took him to the vet to have his nails done and for some reason he got in a pickle in his carrier and bit really hard on the plastic all the time we were in the car. His first infection was two days after. I do wonder if he damaged a tooth. Poor chap, I'll take him back to the original vet when he's back off holiday and see what he thinks.

Oh, no!!! I am so, SO sorry to hear this terrible news. Poor Bailey; I really feel bad for the little darling. He doesn't seem to be able to have a break before getting another lump. My heart goes out to you both; I really do hope that the vet is able to help him so it won't continually be a recurring problem for him. I am wishing you and your darling Bailey the very best. Hugs.

I am sorry to hear Bailey has another lump herbi, it does sound more & more likely that there is some issue with his teeth going on, I hope the original vet can help him out & he can come through this ok.
Wishing all the best for him.

Thanks cypher and dream tree. Yes my heart sank when I saw the state of him last night. His eye is swollen again and he has rubbed all his fur off round it and even round the other one too! He was restless again and had diarrhoea from the slight overdose of apple juice I gave hjm in his porridge I stopped being so careful counting the drops as he tolerated it so well. Feel like a bad hamster mum, nothing I do makes him better . Gave him plenty of dry oatmeal to bung him up again and just going to check on him now and give the meds. If he can get infections while he's on antibiotics there's got to be something nasty underlying it all I think.

Sorry to hear this has happened again. It does sound like there is something not right going on here herbi. The eye socket / tear ducts/ teeth roots are very close to the brain I'm afraid and if there is an infection that is tracking up then he may be in some distress over this. It can cause the confusion you describe. If it is getting in to his blood system too then the toxins will be making him feel very unwell.
I know you have tried very hard for him but I think he needs taken back for another examination and you be sure and ask him what he wants you to do as I'm sure he will give you a little sign if he has had enough. x I am thinking of you as this is a very challenging time for you as a hamster parent.

Don't feel like a bad hamster mum herbi! There's a lot going on with your little man & you're doing your very best for him.
It does sound as though something is underlying but I think you also have to take his age into account too, at that age he won't be able to fight infections & heal as well as he would have done at a younger age so it would take longer for him to heal anyway.
You really can't do more than you are at the moment I don't think & I'm sure he knows & appreciates the love & care you're giving him.

You are an excellent mum; you are giving Bailey all the love and nursing him as best as you can. It does appear that there is some underlying health issue that is causing all of this for your poor little Bailey. As Cypher has mentioned, with his age, Bailey will also have more difficulties combating all of these infections and healing as quickly. I am really, REALLY sorry that you and your darling little one are going through all of this. I am sending you extra huge hugs and cuddles to your precious Bailey.
