HELP! Hamster dragging her back leg
Hiya,
I have a 16 month old syrian female that i took in from rescue and she drags her back foot when she walks. Her toes appear to be curled and it is a normal temperature and she doesn't seem bothered when i touch it or her leg or rotate her hip. She is eating/drinking fine, and even puts weight on the limb. She is full of life, its hard to keep up with her and is very relaxed.
I took her to the vet today and got Metacam and an X-ray. The x-ray showed a perfectly healthy leg and foot! The vet has referred me to a specialist vet and i have an appointment in 2 weeks but i am at a loss of what it could be.
I am wondering if anyone else has had the same thing happen? If so, what did you do?
I am at a loss. I just hope whatever it is mends itself soon. I am ensuring she has a varied diet and giving her vitamins.
Any help appreciated as I can't help but worry!
Thanks,
Jay

Re: HELP! Hamster dragging her back leg
I'm sorry but I'm not sure what it could be. I'm glad though that your vet has referred her on to a specialist so that you can hopefully get to the bottom of it.
Do you know if she has always dragged her back foot? I'm wondering if it could be a birth defect.
I hope your girl will be ok but it sounds quite positive if she is hamstering around well and is so full of life

Re: HELP! Hamster dragging her back leg
I think there are at least a couple of possible causes, as BP says it is possible that she could have been born with a deformed foot & has always been unable to use it or it could be a tendon injury from a fall or other accident which wouldn't show up on an x ray.
I hope the specialist vet can help whatever the problem may be, she does sound as though she's doing fine in spite of it.

Re: HELP! Hamster dragging her back leg
I am also not entirely sure what could have caused this, but BP and Cypher gave very good possibilities. I do hope that vet specialist will be able to determine what is making your sweetheart drag her back foot. She does sound like she is coping well though; I will be continue to keep my fingers crossed that she will continue hamstering around well.
