Hemp Bedding?
I was thinking of buying Hemp bedding from Landi, can Hamsters get allergies from this? I know some people can.

Re: Hemp Bedding?
I use hemp bedding from zooplus for my guinea pigs litter trays and for my hamster cage bases. I also use a paper based bedding for the hamsters called fitch, sold in the uk.
Not had any problems with allergies.

Re: Hemp Bedding?
They can have problems with hemp but it is rare, I've used it & my hams were all fine with it.
It can vary a fair bit depending on the brand though, some are dustier than others & some can have quite sharp pieces.
I found Hugro hemp to be the best.

Re: Hemp Bedding?
So I've bought the Hemp bedding that is just 7 kg, and I touched the material and it seems to be hard, is Hemp really safe for Hamsters? I'm just worried if Toria or Franc digs under it, their eyes will get poked or if they try to chew or swallow it.

Re: Hemp Bedding?
As I said before a lot depends on the brand, if it feels too hard or sharp then I wouldn't use it.

It's not too sharp nor too hard, but it's hard to touch compared to the wood shavings I use, It's easy to break as well, It's just seems to be my first time having Hemp Bedding, the product is called Vita Balance Hanfstreu, it's not as dusty as it seems.

Re: Hemp Bedding?
It'll probably be fine. I also worried about pokey bits and eyes but have never heard of anyone having issues with this.

Re: Hemp Bedding?
thank you for this thread. I was thinking about switching to hemp bedding because all the wood shavings in my country is pine or cedar.

Re: Hemp Bedding?
I considered hemp before but had the same concerns as you. I found it too stubby and hard so decided against it.
You could put some in a tray in the play pen to see if your hamster likes it.

Re: Hemp Bedding?
Mine both have it, and they seem to really like it. I use Carefresh and Kaytee Clean and Cosy near, and in, the nest. I layer the hemp with timothy hay in the rest of cage. They only burrow in the hemp. My dwarf has a little nest he built himself in the hemp too. He uses it for quick naps now and again.
As for poked eyes, mine always have their eyes closed when they are burrowing.
