If you use vinegar then you are going to need to rinse really well maybe several times & possibly leave the tank to air a bit, it's such a strong smell & their noses are sensitive to do make sure the smell is totally gone before filling the cage again.
I hope the clean gets rid of anything that might be causing a problem & Hope will soon be comfortable & able to settle again soon.

As Cypher said, undiluted vinegar is extremely strong smelling, so I would be sure to rinse and dry everything completely prior to setting the cage up again. Good luck with whatever is causing the problems. Hopefully, Hope will be settled in again soon.

Hi,
I know this post is quite old but I wanted to update about what happened at the vets as it still isn't resolved.Unfortunately my hamster can't have a skin scrape test as she is to wild so they could end up injuring her. They said anaesthetic is to risky. The vet said her skin looked fine but it could still be mites as she was/is scratching. She gave me two options.Watch and wait or put on spot on treatment.I decided to watch and wait.I cleaned out her bedding and disinfected her cage, toys and wheels.5 days later she is still scratching. She is also shaking her body like a wet dog and rubbing up against her cage.I have made her another appointment for spot on as she doesn't seem any less itchy.I also took out the sand in case that was irritating her.Sorry for such a long post I am just worried about her
Thanks,
Em

Thanks for the update. I am sorry that she is still going through this. At this point, I agree that another vet visit and give her the spot on treatment is best. I hope that this cures her. I will be wishing you both the very best. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that things haven't improved, I hope the treatment helps & she will finally be able to settle again.

Hope went to get her spot on today(xeno 50).She has to have another 2 doses 2 weeks apart.Whe have throughly cleaned her cage again and the things in it.We have also cleaned around it.I just have one other question. How do you get rid of mites on wooden toys? Some people say freezing works and some don’t.How do you bake wooden toys?I wasn’t sure whether to post on this thread or start a new one.
Thanks,
Emily and Hope 🙂🐹💕

Freezing should kill of mites & eggs but you can never be totally sure, you need to freeze things for at least 48 hrs, I usually leave things in the freezer for a week.
Sometimes with situations like this it's better to just cut your losses & bin any wood or natural materials.
