Hamster problems after being spayed
Hi all,
My hamster Peaches is about 1 year and 3 months old. (I'm not exactly sure).
A couple of months ago she was spayed as she was sleeping a lot, and had a lot of horrible puss coming out of her.
She slowly started to get better after the op. Today I picked her up and noticed that she has a very big belly, and some of the puss is back.
I am so distraught and I don't know what to do. She still eats and drinks and sometimes goes on her wheel but mainly sleeps all day in her cosy bed.
Must I take her to the vet (yet again - I really don't think they can help her)
Just leave her be or possibly put her down? She doesn't seem to be in pain but I am so worried her life is horrible.
Thanks in advance
Saskia, a worried hammie mom

Re: Hamster problems after being spayed
Hi there
I'm so sorry to hear things have not improved.
It sounds as if she has an internal infection inside the spay area. It takes some time to heal inside and if infection had leaked in to the abdomen during the op it is very hard to treat once it is established.
I wouldn't just leave her because she will be in pain. I think maybe it is time to let her go and run free from all this. Treatment of this secondary infection is unlikely to help. You sound to already know her life is not comfortable anymore. If she was mine I would make that very hard decision. You have tried very hard for her.
I hope she can be seen very soon and her path is gentle x

Re: Hamster problems after being spayed
THank you so much for replying. I think I agree with you, she doesn't seem too comfortable but I also don't know if I want to put her down. She seems happy but she has a bloated tummy all the time. I will take her to the vet and ask his opinion.
I was already thinking that putting her down would be best.
Thank you Soufflé xx

Re: Hamster problems after being spayed
You have to make the decision from love and putting her first. Hamsters are good at hiding pain. I hope you can have her seen soon and be able to decide from that. It is hard to make that choice but your vet will know what she should be like at this stage.
