Confusing weights
Hi there!
My 2 male hamsters(almost 12 months old) recently has gained quite amount of weight. Myachick has grown from 169g to 173g over this month and Dumpling has grown from 151g to 156g. I changed their diet by purchasing new food packages and I can notice very obvious weight gain by simply placing them in my hands.
Is it normal that they are still growing at this speed around 1 year old? Is the food healthy to eat? Any bad consequence after growing too much weight? Should I limit their food supply?

Re: Confusing weights
What were you feeding them before? The living world food you're giving now isn't too bad, it has a few dubious ingredients, mainly the fruit, and the protein is low but without knowing how that compares to their previous food I can't see how much of a difference there is.
They won't still be growing at their age so keep an eye on their weight, it may stabilise once they've been on the new food for a while.

Re: Confusing weights
Thank you cypher! I will keep a limit when feeding this to them.
I also have these two food to feed my hamsters all the time, but I add some walnuts, oats, and fresh broccoli to their meals everyday:

Re: Confusing weights
Versele Laga food isn't very good quality, it's quite low in protein too & the ingredients are very good, I'm not sure about the other as I couldn't find a GA or ingredients list.
It may be that the new food is better quality & their nutrition has improved which would explain the weight gain, as far as I can tell they're still possibly not getting as much protein as they should, by a year they don't need too much but if they like them a few mealworms would help top it up & some plain cooked chicken or dried chicken once or twice a week would help too.
Walnuts & oats are both really good foods, they do have some protein & healthy fats but not complete protein, broccoli is great too but try to give a wide variety of veg not just broccoli.

Re: Confusing weights
Has the amount of exercise on their wheels been changing? If so the food might not be the problem. But daily your hamster should be consuming around 2 tsp of food in a day

Re: Confusing weights
I don't think that is a big change in weight and it's a healthy weight for an adult hamster - Newt is 225g! I wouldn't worry about it. I am sure their weight fluctuates a bit sometimes and I think they can still grow up to a year old.

Re: Confusing weights
Thank you SimonandSyril for your great indication! I have not noticed any change in their exercise time since they always wake up around 1am and runs till 6am (I hear wheel rotating sounds from time to time during this period). I guess they are just on their way of non-stop growing lol. And BTW, Myachick has reached to 178g and Dumpling has reached to 160g now. Kiwi girl exercises more than before and she is 143g.
Thank you Serendipity7000 for your case sharing! Now Myachick and Dumpling have reached to 1 year old now and the weight keeps growing 1-2 grams per week. I hope it is not fat but muscles that are developing.
Thanks again for your great and timely advice, I really appreciate!

Re: Confusing weights
Ok, things kinda went out of control now.... I changed the diet into homemade diet: oats, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, dried apple, dried banana, broccoli, and occasional spinach. Now Myachick has grown into 184g and Dumpling is 165g over a month.
I am a bit concerned since they are already 13 months old.
Are they in healthy weights? Please help!!!!

Re: Confusing weights
Neither of your hams are particularly large, Syrian weights vary a lot so there isn't really an average or any way to say what weight may be right for someone else's ham without seeing & handling it tbh.
Weight isn't the only issue though, you have to think of overall health.
Do you mean you are feeding them just that home made mix? They really need a good balanced diet that will provide all the nutrients they need to remain healthy & for that unless you are experienced in hamster nutrition & prepared to do a lot of calculations needed to create a good diet you should stick to a good commercial food mix in addition to a good variety of veg (not just one or two things) daily, the odd extra now & then is fine but that should be the main part of what they eat.
