Default 2 Syrians same room? M or F?

So you may know I'm thinking about adopting a second hamster who will live in the same room (but obviously different cage) to my male Syrian Toby. Does it matter whether I adopt a female or male? I have no intention of breeding, but I don't know if the smell of a female would excite Toby or if having a rival male nearby would frustrate him and is it likely that having another Syrian will affect his behaviour? Which gender is less likely to affect Toby or is it more sensible not to have another Syrian at all? Thank you! X

Either way they do get used to the scent of another hamster however with a female both tend to get really worked up when she is in heat every 4th night. Female will chew and try and get out to find the male and male will try and get to female. If you prefer not to have this then I'd choose another male.

I’ve successfully kept males and females in the same room. However, as souffle said, the two will generally try to get out and see one another when she goes into heat. With two males, they also did seem a slight more aggressive when it came to chewing on their cages. In the end though, as long as they have plenty of entertainment, and secure cages; I wouldn’t worry yourself over it too much, they get used to it. Best of luck with whatever you do choose

I keep all of my Chinese in the one room (both males and females) and I've not really had a problem with it but I don't keep Syrians so I don't know if they're likely to be any different. Mine seem to be pretty used to the smells of each other and just go about their business as normal. Sometimes I'll notice a change in their behaviour if I bring a new hamster in or one dies but I think that might have been due to the scents in the room changing. I had one little pet shop Chinese that used to try to flirt with all of the others but they just used to ignore her and as long as I was sure that her cage was secure, I didn't worry about her getting out or anything... she had a short attention span anyway so if her flirting was ignored, she'd just go off and play with something else that caught her eye.

If you're worried though, it may be better to do as Souffle suggests and get another male rather than a female.

I have kept two males in the same room with nomissues (cages not next to each other in case of agressiom).

I kept a female with males in the same room and she made little sneezy squeaks to them which caused a lot of excitement!!!

Good luck finding your second hamster.
