Default Huge hamster! Normal?

Ive been thinking about getting a second hamster and went to see one up for adoption today. When she was taken out of her bed I was shocked by her size: she's much bigger than the other Syrians I've owned (male and female). Is her size likely to just be a genetic trait that she and her sister have inherited or are there likely to be any health problems associated with her size? I agreed with the shop assistant that the hamster isn't fat (although her sister's a little overweight) but I'm just surprised about how big she was and am wary of if there are any underlying issues I should be aware of. Any opinions? Thanks for your help!

How lovely! I really like big hamsters A lot of breeder hamsters are large as well. Yes they can come in all sizes lol. Often pet shop hamsters can be a bit small. Although our previous syrian was a pet shop hamster and he was huge! He grew so much in the first two weeks I went back to the pet shop and asked if they were sure he was a hamster lol! He was about 225g. A lovely big boy.

It is just genetics probably but not abnormal. Just as people can be tall or short. You would need a good sized cage though. I found with a large syrian that I needed bigger stuff in it - large tunnels and houses etc - although generally that's a good idea for syrians anyway to have rat sized toys. And those filled up an 80cm cage too much. A 100cm cage was just right.

I have a massive hamster at the moment! She is around 210g and I really love it! I find there's more to cuddle which can only be a good thing! Although as Serendipity said they do need more space... my girl is only happy in a 100cm cage with lots of big toys, + she comes out for about 2 hours every night and strops if I try and put her back before that! Big hams may need more exercise time, a much larger wheel and a bigger cage, but big hams are the best
In my experience bigger hams don't have any additional health issues, although of course each hamster is individual...

What is her coloring? I find females are generally bigger especially the black hamsters(also nicknamed Blackbear hamsters) who are quite large in size and can be up to 200g or more. How do u know she's overwheight? It's not easy to tell by looking at a hamster if they are overweight or not. Since she is a bigger hamster and has a larger bone structure than other syrians doesn't mean she is overweight meaning she will have extra body coverage and fat which could be the adequate weight for her body structure.

Bertie weighed about 225g at his heaviest. I always called him Mama's Fat Potato but he was never particularly fat as such, just big. He was also incredibly lazy - he would only use his wheel for a few minutes at a time and much preferred seeing what food was in his bowls.

Sounds amazing everyone! I now love the idea of having a big ham but sadly I don't think it would be sensible to adopt Lily. I have an apropriate size wheel and a detolf waiting to be converted but I will be away over the summer and will struggle to find people to look after two hamsters in large cages at a reasonable price and I probably won't be able to give them enough time. Really sad I can't give the hamster a home but hopefully she'll end up with a good owner. X
