Default Is my hamster upset or injured? Please help!

Last night, my hamster got into the heater vent along the wall. It was a struggle to get him out, and I don't know if I hurt him in the process. I thought he was fine, though, because he was still energetic afterward and was okay with being held. However, tonight, I went to check on him, and he was hiding in the back corner of his cage and wouldn't come up to see me like he normally does. I got him to eat a few mealworms from my hand, but then he went back to the corner and I could hear him chattering his teeth really loudly and tossing his lab blocks around. He seems angry, but could he actually be hurt?

It's hard to say if he's been hurt or not, you would need to get him out & check him over to have a better idea, he's bound to be a bit stressed after that & may take a couple of days to settle down again.

Well, I just went back to check on him, and he was out in the open, eating normally, and fine with being pet. But his fur was matted and he randomly started chewing on the bars of his cage for a couple of seconds. And he keeps periodically chattering loudly.

It does sound as though he's just been a bit stressed then, he should sort his fur out himself soon enough, keep an eye on him but give hime some time to settle down.

Okay, thanks!
Quick question: he seemed to get really annoyed when his skirt got in his mouth while eating (but it might just have been because of his stressed mood). Do you think I should trim it?

I have no experience with long haired syrians so no idea if trimming him now would be a good idea or not tbh!
As far as being hurt goes you could just check for any cuts, scratches, signs of swelling, limping & keep an eye on his behaviour, eating etc just to be sure everything is ok.

I'd trim the skirt if it seems to be getting in the way. It's likely full of dust from the escape and he may get a bad taste or upset trying to groom it. It is no different to us having a hair cut and he won't mind at all. The only time they need a skirt is if they are show hamsters.
Monitor him closely in case he has nibbled something nasty in the heating vents. Hammies who have escaped once do tend to try it again so make sure everything is secure.

Thanks! I checked on him tonight, and he's back to his old self. I also trimmed his skirt. I did notice while spot cleaning that there was a lot of poop everywhere. It was dry, and his fur was clean, so he doesn't have wet tail, but could the amount of droppings mean he was anxious?
