You're welcome Yes I'd put 4 to 6 inches of substrate in if you can. Maybe scatter a bit of food on it too - and hide the odd treat in different places - that'll distract her for a bit. Does she have plenty of nesting material? It's really cold at the moment and they need to build a big nest to keep warm, plus the room needs to be the right temperature (ie don't let it get to freezing overnight) - I use a small oil filled radiator on a timer for an hour or two at night in the room our hamster is in.

Another reason for bar chewing (if not a regular thing) can be to get attention to tell you something isn't right - eg wheel stuck, water bottle empty or just desperate to get out because they can't feel warm and cosy or not enough space or something.

Tips for moving her over to the new cage. Any change of cage can be stressful and stress can cause bar chewing! This can be minimised to have a smooth transition.

Fill the new cage (which is bigger) with substrate, but keep all the old substratet from the old cage and spread it on top, so it smells familiar. Avoid the temptation to clean everything when you move things over - that can wait. Also try and put things in a similar layout to before if possible - ie wheel in similar location and toys etc.

I also let them play in it a couple of times before moving over and find that really helps. So you'd have substrate in it and maybe a couple of toys and a toy from the old cage and pop her in and let her explore it. Then put her back in the old cage, then either move her over a day or so later, or do this again the next day, and then move her over the day after.

It means they're already familiar wiht the new cage and have scent marked a bit. I found it worked well. Some people just move them straight in - some depends on the hamster, but when I did the cold turkey move with our last Syrian it seriously freaked him out for a couple of weeks and the transition move worked much better. His first explore in the new cage and he panicked and wanted to come out again. Second time you could almost see him smiling and he spent ages exploring it and just having a nice time So when he moved in he just settled straight away.

I have a couple of videos of our last syrian, Charlie, exploring the Barney cage before he moved in (so it's not set up). I speeded them up as they were a bit long

The first one was the first time he went in the cage - he was a bit cautious and nervy and didn't stay in long. Later in the day he was clamouring to come out of his old cage and seemed to want to go back in the new one again so put him in again and he had a great time. Moved him over the day after.

And this is when our current syrian moved into the Barney cage when he was a baby - he's a bit livelier and likes digging

I opted for the Alaska cage due to space restrictions though it is nearly as big as the Barney, when it arrived Mrs R nearly went loopy at the size..!
Seriously though, having a sand pit for Kendrick is essential one thing I have found is that Hammies like the sand pit next/very nearby their nest if it is too far away they pee in their nests which means very regular clean outs which can spook your Hammie, Ghost has a nice deep sand pit approx. 4-5 inches where he pee's in one corner and tries to dig to Australia in the rest. When he poo's he goes up onto one of the shelves sticks his bum against the bars and sends his poo outside of his cage...!
Hammies do tend to be creatures of habit some are ok with changes in their cages some have a hissy fit..

Kendrick is in my bedroom at the moment, and I get cold easily so the temperature is actually not too cold thankfully

Your hamster looks super cute! Thank you for the substrate-sub method, I was wondering what could be done to prevent Kendrick from stressing out during the move and this method seems fantastic!

I'm probably going to buy the Alaska cage, although I want the Barney, I've just got home and measured the top of the drawers (right next to my bed) and it's just enough to fit the Alaska.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated and learnt!

Kendrick's done that once, next to the wheel she pooped and it dropped on the carpet! She seems to be pooping/peeing in one corner most of the time, there's some poo in her igloo so I'm going to clear that out tonight when she's awake!

With the cage, I'm going to go for the Alaska like you've suggested, I would like the Barney but there is no way it's fitting in my room without some sort of obstruction Regardless, I trust that it will be a good and much needed upgrade.

I'm assuming the sand bath/sand is available on zoo plus too?

do you have a lot of toys in the cage because they might be bored which could be why the're sleeping a lot. your hamster might be a hamster who doesn't like its wheel

I've got a couple of toys in there at the moment, I've made an order from zoo plus last night for the new cage & a couple of other toys! Her sleeping schedule has become 'normal', she gets up at around 8PM and goes to sleep at 12AM for an hour or so and comes back out to play until 7-8AM. I think it was just first/second day nerves that made her sleep a lot. Also, she's using the wheel a lot more now, I've got a large exercise ball which she went in yesterday (with the mount so she can really exercise), she seemed to love it as she didn't want to go back in her cage! But I know that she might become overheated inside the ball so I put her back for 10 mins and she exercised a little more!
