Unhappy Question about vets

Hey guys,

I need to take Remus (2 year old Syrian) to the vets as his nails have got stupidly long recently. I'm not sure why he's stopped scratching at the bottom of his cage but the past week he's not been on his wheel at all either whilst I've been awake (he might've when i've been asleep but I'm really not sure) and i'm getting more and more worried about him.

It might be because of his age but besides his nails and the fact that he doesn't seem to be going on his wheel he seems fine. He's just as excitable and eager to come out and have a run around at night as he has been for the past few years.

Now I have an issue when it comes to the vets in the fact that Remus isn't tame. So if/when I take him to the vets are they going to expect me to be able to hold him or will they just hold him and clip his nails? Can someone advise please? Or is it something I'm best asking when I ring to make the appointment?

I'm so worried that taking him to the vets to have his nails trimmed is going to stress him out unnecessarily but i'm desperate and I'm thinking it might be my only option now.

Update: As I type he's running a mile a minute on his wheel! So at least I don't have to worry about that bit now! But still, any advice regarding the vet would be helpful, thank you

Default Re: Question about vets

Most vets who have treated hamsters should be used to handling ones that aren't tame, even tame hams can get stressed & be hard to handle at the vet so they should be able to deal with it.
It is stressful for them but try not to worry about it too much, if his nails are too long then they have to be trimmed & it's probably better to get the vet to do it than have a go yourself if you're not confident about it.
Maybe his lack of activity & wheel use lately has just been down to the weather, they really do seem to prefer to stay in bed more when it's cold even in a heated house & more so as they get older.
