So I was giving Tangerine a treat whilst my hand was in his cage and I felt something crawling on my arm. Lo and behold, it was (what looked like) a flea.
It jumped off my arm before I could kill it.
About a month ago I was waking up with several small, itchy red bugbites all over my body. My first thought was bedbugs, but looking back on it they resembled flea bites. We were going to hire a K9 bug inspector but the bugbites stopped appearing abruptly (after two weeks of waking up with bites). Just thought this was worth mentioning.
My cat sleeps on my bed during the day (only while I’m in the room to make sure she doesn’t bother the boys). She’s an indoor-outdoor cat. We always stay on track of her flea treatment because if we miss the deadline at all she almost always gets bitten. But now and then we’ll find a flea on her, or on my dog despite staying on top of the treatment. So the flea might have just come straight from my cat today, since she was in my room all day and when I found the flea.
Since the waking up with bugbites incident, I’ve been monitoring the boys to make sure they aren’t scratching excessively. Neither of them have.
I didn’t find any fleas in Tangerine’s cage when I was cleaning it last weekend, and I haven’t seen any signs of them (eggs, flea dirt, dead fleas) on the toys, on Tangerine or in the bedding (albeit they’d probably be hard to see!).
I’m a bit worried. What should I do? Deep clean Tangerine’s cage, or wait it out to see if I find any more signs of flea infestation? Has anyone else here dealt with fleas in their hamster cage?
