chewing the bars
Hello everyone,
A few months ago, Sherbet loved to bite hid cage bars.
I gave him loads of toys and stuff but he kept chewing on the bars. Then he rubbed the top of his nose so much on the other bar that the skin was rubbed off and there was a big cut.
He does not bite them any more but is there any advise you could give?
I know you can put lemon juice or oil on the cage but it just goes all sticky.
Any other suggestions?
Thx Superhammygirl.

Re: chewing the bars
My hamster is the same and chews her bars all the time even with tons of other chew options. How did you treat his cut on his nose? My girl just got one.

Re: chewing the bars
Bar chewing can be for a number of reasons - it can be because the cage isn't big enough or not suitable in some way. But it can develop into a habit after a while. You wouldn't want to put lemon juice or any other nasty tasting thing on the bars - that's not good for them. You could weave cardboard (eg torn up toilet roll) around the area he chews but they often then just move on to another area. Do you have a photo of your set up? If something isn't right in their environment, they want to escape and bar chewing can be that too.
