Infection in eye?
I took my syrian hamster Luna to the vet on Saturday morning (5 days ago) because I noticed that her eye was very red, sore and her cheek was very swollen. She was also sneezing a lot. The vet prescribed Baytril for the infection and Loxicom for the swelling and pain.
I took her back 3 days later (yesterday) as he suggested and they put her under anaesthetic to see inside her mouth, incase it was an abcess or something stuck in her pouch, but nothing was found. I was told to continue with the medication and to clean out her eye.
Since then, her eye is stuck shut with crusty discharge and when we rinse her eye with warm water loads of yellow puss pops out, as well as blood. She also has blood and some crusty discharge coming out of her nose and she's still sneezing a lot.
I'm worried as she's not eating (probably because of the pain) and I don't want any of this to damage her eye. She is still quite young, only a year old, and I don't want anything to happen to her. We are due to see the vet again in a week. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this or has any advice on what I can do to keep her comfortable in the meantime or maybe get her eating a bit?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Infection in eye?
Poor thing this sounds nasty. It does sound as if there is something going on much higher up and I would suspect a tooth root abcess discharging in to the sinuses. This must be very painful. Getting her to eat will be a problem due to this and she is likely swallowing the pus which won't help. You can try things like babyfood, porridge pasta and rice to tempt her but I would take her back to the vets and seriously consider her life quality. There are also tumours that can form in the sinuses which are nasty. It needs looked at again. I do hope she rallies round x

Re: Infection in eye?
Unfortunately the morning after I posted this, luna was struggling to breathe and seemed very out of sorts; curling up in the middle of her cage rather than in her bed. I took her to the vet asap that morning and they suggested that they put her down due to the fact that the medication hadn’t helped after a week. They gave the option of an operation or to prolong the antibiotics but I could tell she was suffering a lot. She was usually very active, running around the vet table, but she just gave up that day. She collapsed into her bed and we decided it was enough for her. It was the hardest decision of my life, but I will love and miss her forever.
