Unhappy Have I given my hamster my cold?

Hello,

I've only just found out that hamsters can catch illnesses from humans - I've had a cold for over a week but I've still been handling her every day. Obviously I've been keeping my hands clean, but I still feel like there's a risk I've given something to her. I'll keep my distance now until I'm better.
She's not showing any signs of being ill, and is still very active and eating, drinking and going to the toilet fine, but I've also read they often won't show signs of illness until its too late.

Should I take her to a vet just in case? Or just keep an eye on her?
Thanks in advance!

Just keep an eye on her I didn't know that at first either and handled our hamster when I had full blown flu for two weeks. Luckily he was ok. Generally it's best to avoid handling them when you have colds or flu - use antibacterial soap or hand wipes before putting food and water out daily (or get someone else to do it) and keep your head turned away from the cage so you don't breathe all over it. And just leave them to themselves for a few days.

I should leave her for a few days now, just in case you are still infectious It sounds like she will be fine if she is not showing any signs of being unwell and is her normal self, so don't worry.

Thanks so much Serendipity - that makes me feel a lot better. I'll leave her for a few days and make sure everything is clean before changing water / food. Thank you!

Washing your hands before handling or touching anything in the cage would be sensible too as most human hands carry bacteria from other sources. Staph. bacteria and worse, depending on where we have been!

The human cold is a virus though and not a bacteria. So cross contamination is unlikely, but it`s still better to be safe than sorry.
