Unhappy Help me please!😥

Please help me!

This morning I went to check on my Sherbet but he seemed to get his hand stuck in the cage door but couldn’t get out and was chewing around it.
When I got him out he was limping and his paw was really swollen.
He didn’t look like he was in pain but he didn’t put any weight on it.
I think he may have Brocken it but I am probably worrying to much and he has just bruised it.
Should I take him to the vets or l leave it to heal on It’s own?
Thanks

It sounds like a stuck paw and he`s been trying to release it? The swelling will be inflammation but depending on how bad that is and whether it will reduce on it`s own will depend on whether he`s just had the paw stuck there for a while or he`s actually fractured anything. Is it his front paw?

What you need to do is monitor this for a few hours and if he can hold food with both paws/hands. If he`s not using it at all, it might be better to see a vet because hamsters have a high metabolism like most small rodents and he may find it difficult to eat/hold food and this could have an effect on him in the days to come.

Is the swelling above his fingers near the wrist joint? Or is it the fingers ON his paw that were trapped? Any blood present or just the swelling?

It’s his front paw and the swelling is around the fingers.
When I gave him some food he only held it with one hand.
I decided to let him sleep it off so he’s asleep right now. There isn’t any blood but after it was trapped his paw was floppy and red.

I think I would get it checked by a vet if it's floppy in case he's broken anything. They may be able to prescribe some meds too and will advise on whether he needs to be in a hospital cage type set up or not, or whether he can stay in his current cage, or whether you need to make some adjustments.

What cage do you have, because they shouldn't really be able to get a paw stuck in the bars? Even narrow bar spacing is usually big enough for paws.

I had a look at your other thread and his photos Is it the plastic pets at home cage? Just wondering if it was the door he got his paw trapped in or somewhere else - I do seem to remember there are some gaps between where the ladder meets the shelf in that cage where a paw could get trapped?

Do you have a pet carrier to take him to the vets in? If not then, if the cage isn't too big to carry you could take him in that, if you could have it on your knee on the way there and hold on to it! In case of any sudden stops etc. If the cage is just in the car and it brakes suddenly they can get thrown across the cage, but should be fine if you are holding it on your knee.

Although you probably have a pet carrier as you've had a hammy before

Red face

Um
I haven’t put any photos on any threads
I think you may have got the written wrong person
He has a big cage and he got it trapped in the lid for his bed

He is a cinnamon and white Syrian hamster who will never sit still and is very greedy

I just went to check on him and his paw has swollen even more all the way up his ankle.
He is also still not putting weight on it.
Is there anything I could do to stop the swelling?

Oh sorry! Must be someone with a similar name I don't know if there is anything you can do to stop the swelling, except possibly rest. I would take him to the vets tomorrow. Which cage is it? I can't imagine a bed with a lid

If it's a house near the top of the cage then it might be an idea to take levels out and just have a house at floor level with his food and water nearby for now - so he can't climb or be too active and make it worse. So it kind of makes it into a hospital cage. Keep his nest though. If you've got something like a cardboard tissue box or shoe box you can cut the base out of and cut a hole as a door, that would do well on top of the substrate and pop his nest inside it.

Is he still using his wheel?

This! Hamsters are far safer in something they can chew and move easily that won`t cause them harm. An upside down shoebox (no lid) so the hamster can dig down into the substrate and cut a few entry/exit doors into it. Cheap and cheerful and easily replaced (and decorated with child friendly paint if your artistic and want to create a bespoke home!)

How is his paw today? x

His cage is rosewood.
It is green and blue with a few layers and one at the bottom.
there is a little box bit at the top that you can open the top of and see him snooooozing.

how much do you think it would be to see the vet because I don't really want to go if it will
heal by itself. Also it may stress him out.

a few mins ago I checked don him and his paw is still swollen but he is putting a little weight on it if he has to, but he tries not to if he can help it.
thanks
