Crusted eyes in elderly hamster
Hello! Our elderly syrian boy of 2 years 6 months keeps having crusted eyes recently. It looks like sleep in his eye - Ralph is sleeping a lot nowadays. I wondered what's the best method to help with this. I did a search and could see saline was recommended. Is this still the case as the posts were a couple of years old. If saline is suggested -do you dilute? I'm a first time hamster owner so not really sure what to do! Ralph was checked by a vet recently and they weren't really sure but we're able to open his eyes (I don't want to hurt him by prodding about). Thanks for your help. I hope with more hamster experience I can contribute to posts!

Re: Crusted eyes in elderly hamster
As long as there's no infection then you don't really need to use saline, it is still recommended for bathing eyes if you do need it but just for crusty eyes in an elderly ham plain warm water with a bit of cotton wool should be fine.
I think normal saline is 2 tsp of salt to a litre of boiled water, you don't dilute it any more after making it.

Re: Crusted eyes in elderly hamster
Thanks Cypher for your response. Ralph doesn't look to have an infection, there is no discharge from his eyes and there is no redness around rim. We will try as you suggested plain warm water / cotton wool. Much appreciated
