Apex is very sick suddenly, no idea what is wrong and no Vet available.
Hi all,
I have 3 hamsters (that are technically my Kids' pets) that all live apart from each other. They are approximately 16 months old. Apex is a long haired Syrian hamster and is usually the most active of them all.
Two days ago I went to check on them, and noticed he wasnt moving much. He is very weak, tired, wont eat, will drink if i push him to. I usually rescue dogs, and when dogs get to the point that they wont eat for whatever reason, I usually use soy based, lactose free baby formula. Even in small amounts, it packs a lot of nutrients. Earlier I was able to get him to take a few bites of bread i had dipped in the formula lighly, and he seemed to perk up a few minutes later, but went back to sleep.
he seems to be breathing slighly labored. I dont notice any crust or runny nose. i did notice it was quite cold in my bedroom where they where. Its an old house and the windows dont seal. I moved them out of there right afterward. I also checked the bedding. Its made by carefresh, but i read everything on the package will not tell me what is in it. I usually get paper bedding, and this showed up but its not what i ordered. It said it was some sort of mixed paper shreds, but when i found the tiny print on the bottom it said something about being partially softwood. So i dumped it out and threw it away. I shredded toilet paper for the bottom of his cage until I get paper bedding. I noticed the other two get crusty eyes and i have to help them get the crust out or they wont open their eyes at all. Im wondering if the bedding didnt do this. I know theyre getting older, but this just doesnt seem like normal sudden onset old age to me. Soemthign is wrong.
I checked his teeth, theyre yellow but they arent too long. His pouches dont seem swollen. He does feel light, and kinda cold i guess. Like to touch him he doesnt feel like a warm little ball of fluff like he usually does. When I put him down in the toilet paper cage, he ran out a little, staggering bc he has no energy and was tripping over the TP, and I noticed him paying special attention to his butt. Not trying to sound gross, but probably 3 time within 5 minutes I noticed he stopped, and was messing around with his bottom, but I couldnt tell what he was doing.
There are no vets around here that will see a hamster, ive tried before. The one I begged to see one, wanted to price gouge the crap out of me and I honestly dont have 200 bucks right now. The dog recently cut his leg open, and I maxed myself out on that. Sigh.
any help woudl be much appreciated.
oh for food, i usually give them a mix of small world pellets, and sunflower seeds, dried corn, and a common hamster mix I cant think of the name. They wont eat the tiny balls that comes in hamster food, so i mix other stuff in there too.
