Default My Hamster has a Swollen Eye and I Don't Know How to Help Him.

So I have 3 winter white dwarf hamsters and 1 has developed some sort of infection around his right eye. His name is Bam Bam and he is one of the 2 hamsters that I got on Christmas (I have had them for a year so far) and he is still living with his brother Bandit. Anyways, I have had something similar happen to my oldest hamster which I have had for almost 2 years now but I have managed to treat him with salt and water. But it is not as bad as Bam Bam. His eye is swollen shut. When I tried to use a wet cotton ball to see what is going on, I noticed that it can barely open and is practically sealed shut. When I saw his eye it was kind of a light foggy blue film covering his eye. I could not get too much of a good look since it was so swollen. But I don't know how to identify what it is and I want to make sure if I need medication that I get the right thing for him. I can not afford to go to a vet so I am hoping someone here can help me.

I think that if you haven't managed to open his eye using a saline solution then he probably needs to see a vet. It does look very swollen and it may be that he needs some antibiotics to help clear up the infection. Have you tried the saline solution only once? It might be that you need to try it a couple of times a day to help loosen it.

I've not really any experience with eye issues so I'm not sure what the foggy blue film could be, hopefully someone else will have an idea.

I know you say that you can't afford a vet but you may be able to discuss paying in instalments for any treatment.

Sorry to hear that your ham is having a problem with his eye, it does look bad & unfortunately it's unlikely you'll be able to treat this yourself so you will need to find some way to have him seen by a vet, BP's suggestion about asking to pay in instalments is a good idea.

The eye looks very swollen there and he really does need to be seen. It could be anything from an infection to glaucoma or even a tumour behind the eye and it is likely painful for him.
Is there any animal charity around that may offer care for animals belonging to people in need. Either that or trying to pay a small amount weekly my be best.
I hope you can sort something out and he is better soon.
