Torpor or dead?
Hi I'm Kat and I'm new to this forum!
So yesterday I didn't see my hamster out all day, but I thought maybe he was just asleep. Yesterday we had snow and it was very cold outside, but I don't think it was also cold in my room. I did have a heater on. Then today I woke up and I just had to check, because I realised I didn't hear him on his wheel either. I saw he was inside his hideaway, and I hoped he was just sleeping. I didn't want to wake him up so I tapped on his hideaway, to which he usually responds, but he didnt. When i picked him up he was slightly cold but not very, and he was in a weird position, kinda like the letter F. He had his arms close to his mouth and they were pointing directly forward, and his legs were pointing straight down. He isn't really stiff I think. His eyes are slightly open but I think I feel some kind of heartbeat, although i can't hear it. I got a waterbottle and filled it with warm water, and put it next to him. I also heated up some gloves (not very warm) and held him in them for about 30 minutes. I also tried the metal spoon trick, where you put it against the nose and see if it fogs up (which means he's breathing) but that didn't happen. I'm so worried.. Does this sound like a dead hamster or one with torpor?
Age: about 8 months

Re: Torpor or dead?
I would say check the claws if he hasn't responded to the warmth, generally the quick which is a line that runs down the middle of the claws is pink in a healthy, live hamster. I think the general rule is if the quick has gone black they have passed on, but I would suggest you take him to a vet asap to make sure.

Re: Torpor or dead?
So sorry to hear this. Keep gently warming him and see if he comes round gradually. He may have passed on but you should know by the end of today. If it is torpor they don't often recover, but there is a chance so warm him up gently. Wrap him in a fleece maybe in a warm room. Or with warm (not hot) gloves again. And keep warming him, it could take quite a while of gentle warming.
