Default Re: Giving oral meds to a robo - help - could I have hurt him?

Thanks for all your help, Cypher! We got most of the test results today (supposedly they'll test some more though, just in case?), and now have antibiotics, so hopefully the little one should start recovering.

Turns out that he had some kind of bacterial infection? On the skin? I've never really heard of that in hamsters, unless they were injured, which he wasn't, so you learn something new every day. So, in the end, the biopsy really was the best way forward and am now of course glad we did it Wonder what caused it though... their cages are kept clean and all their veg is washed... and only one ham was affected. I'll have to find out a bit more about this, as I have no idea.

Thanks again for the baby food tip, thanks to this, he actually looks forward to his meds, he gets all excited for it

Vet was impressed how well he healed after the biopsy, he won't even need to go back for a second check up, so unless something changes, he's all set for a smooth recovery

That's great that you got the results & know what you're dealing with now, & that he's enjoying his meds!

It's hard to say what might have caused a bacterial infection but my guess is it's more likely to have been an immune system issue than a hygiene issue, no matter how clean you keep things bacteria are everywhere all the time & it's often more about how the body copes with them, it doesn't have to be anything major to cause a slight immune weakness but you may never really know.
Have you thought about giving him some probiotics? That would help him cope with the antibiotics (give them at least a few hours apart) & give his immune system a bit of a boost too.
I give mine a dose of probiotics weekly, not essential by any means but just something I like to do, I use Potent brew but you can get ProC from P@H & other pet shops, don't put it in water though if you do use them, just a tiny bit on food is fine, they are quite palatable (to a ham!) so you don't normally need to worry about whether they take it or not.
He's doing so well already so I'm sure he'll be all better soon
