My first pet Male Syrian- I keep finding bloodied bedding
Hello everyone I’m new here and really need some advice. A few nights ago I found quite a bit of blood at the bottom of Neo’s cage, then when I removed his house there was more bedding that was blood stained. I got him out and checked him over and can’t see any signs of cuts or scrapes and there is no blood in his urine or poo.
After reading a few things online I took his wheel away so he could rest a night, I checked on him when I got back from work the next day and he seemed completely fine, took him out later that night and he was his normal self, investigating smells and had a run around in his ball.
Last night I find one piece of bedding with some dried blood on, he just seems very tired, didn’t want to run around as much and was a bit on edge. This morning I can see another piece of bloodied bedding which wasn’t there last night.
Any idea what I can do to help him? I can’t see anything on him that’s causing this bleeding and I’m worried about his health. He is my first ever pet and I want to give him the best life possible, I absolutely love him and I’m running out of ideas so that’s why I joined to share this as majority of stories about blood I found were about female Syrians.
I hope someone can help

Any blood can be serious. It sounds like you suspect the wheel. What wheel is it? Is it a wood wheel? Are there any traces of blood on the wheel? It sounds like a vet check might be an idea, unless you find it is a foot or toenail that is bleeding maybe.

Re: My first pet Male Syrian- I keep finding bloodied bedding
He has a habitrail ovo house and it’s one of their orange plastic wheels. I don’t suspect the wheel it’s just I think he needs rest. There’s nothing on the wheel.
He looks fine but the rate he cleans himself I can’t see any problems.
I’m new to owning a pet, what kind of vet do I need to look for?
Thanks for your reply

Re: My first pet Male Syrian- I keep finding bloodied bedding
Sorry to hear this, any blood loss is worrying. I'm not quite clear if you put the wheel back in after the first night?
If there's no sign of blood anywhere on him, nothing obvious like blood on his feet or on the wheel then it sounds as though it could be something internal, even if his pee & poo seems normal with no signs of any wound externally you have to consider that & a vet check would be helpful if this continues as it's not really possible to guess what it might be.

@cypher - the wheel went back in and he used it a little. Is it possible one of his cheek pouches is scratched? It’s the only place I can’t look at

The Ovo is a bit too small for a syrian and the wheel is probably too small as well. A bin cage might be a better idea. You can attach the ovo to it with tubes if you want.
That wouldn't cause bleeding though. Was it definitely blood?

Re: My first pet Male Syrian- I keep finding bloodied bedding
I agree about the cage & wheel but if there's no blood anywhere other than in his nest then the cage/wheel probably has nothing to do with it.
It is always possible he could have damaged a pouch if he's had anything sharp or rough in them but I would have thought you'd see blood around his mouth if that was the case.
Where are you? In the Uk most vets will treat hamsters but some are far more experienced than others so you need to phone around any vets in your area & ask, in the US you need to find an exotics vet as most normal vets don't always deal with small rodents like hamsters.
If you can tell us where you are someone here may be able to recommend a vet if you do need one.

Re: My first pet Male Syrian- I keep finding bloodied bedding
Your link doesn't work but I think you mean this cage, it is tiny really, probably about half the size of the cages most use for syrian hams, when he's grown he'll need a large wheel, some hams are ok with an 8" wheel if they're on the small side but many need a 10 or 12" wheel which might give you an idea of the size cage you need just to get the wheel in!
If it looks like dried blood & he doesn't have anything in his cage which could leach out colour then it most likely is blood.

Re: My first pet Male Syrian- I keep finding bloodied bedding
The twist is attached to the habitrail ovo suite, he only really goes in the twist to use the wheel and get a treat or two from the bowl.
His whole setup is around 44” across... and he spends most his time in the smallest pod at the top lol.
Just wondering, what type of water is best to use for his water bottle as I’ve been using tap?
