Exclamation Lola has a lump 😔

Hi Hamster Central,
I was going to post tonight too update you on Daisy and Lola but now it is much more serious.
They have been living happily and separately since I last posted and I was just about to buy them both a Kerry Terrarium from Zooplus.

However, last night I noticed that Lola has developed a red lump, kind of behind her ear. It still won’t let me upload photos but I’m working on a way to put them up. Let me know when I eventually get them up if you think it is a cancerous lump or possibly just an abscess? I think she may have cancer but I’m hoping it might be something else. She seems happy enough at the moment but if it is cancer then I’ll obviously need to make her as comfortable as possible.

Firstly should I take her to the vets and if it was cancer, can they give her anything (I know removal is not an option as surgery is such a risk). Secondly should I still change her cage over or will it be too stressful for her? If not what can I do to make everything as easy as possible. Finally should I supplement her diet in anyway (and with what).

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m a bit lost and unsure what I want to do.

Many thanks
Tee

I had to put the photos into a video as it won’t let me upload them, sorry they are blurry.

Thanks Tee xx

It's impossible to say what it might be from photos, from the position it could even be a pouch problem.
Get her a vet appointment as soon as you possibly can, once you have a diagnosis then you know what the options are & how best to care for her.

ETA I just wanted to add a bit more in case you're totally unsure what to expect at the vet, it does depend on what they find but if it is an infection then she will need antibiotics which should clear it up for her, she may need metacam for pain relief too, even if she doesn't appear to be in pain they are very good at hiding it. If it turns out to be a growth of some sort then surgery is a possibility, it is a big risk for small hams but they can & do come through surgery ok so don't rule it out until you've discussed things with your vet.

Good luck with her, let us know how it goes.

A quick trip to the vet is the best thing to do. Things like this could be anything like an infection or tumour.

Thank you, my vets are closed at the weekend so I’ll phone first thing Monday to see what appointments they have. For now she seems content enough (still eating and drinking), I feel so helpless. I’ll keep you updated.

Also, does anyone know if this carrier (large) can be used with dwarf hamsters? I’ve only every used mine with my Syrians so I don’t know if they would escape from it? http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pe...animal-carrier

Sorry to read Lola's got a lump, it's important when you phone the vet on Monday that you ask for an emergency appointment, most vets reserve a certain time each day that deals with emergencies, the sooner you see a vet, the quicker you get a diagnosis.
That carrier is fine, just be sure to pack it with plenty substrate and toilet tissue. I would include something from her cage like a hideout/house, having her being able to smell her scent will be a comfort to her and a piece of apple or cucumber.

Hope the vet visit goes well. I used that size carrier to bring home a young Russian dwarf hamster and she didn’t escape. I put some substrate and torn up tissue and a piece of cucumber in it. The pet shop gave me some of her nesting material from the cage she was living in, so it smelt familiar. A cardboard box/tube maybe nice for the hamster to hide in.

What the others say I also think it may be to do with a pouch so it could be an abscess that needs draining and antibiotics. You need a diagnosis from the vet so you can decide what to do next. I am sure she will be ok moving cage but maybe not right now as a vet visit is a bit stressful and until you know what treatment is needed, maybe best to wait a little bit.
