Hamster died very suddenly
Hi,
I brought my first Syrian hamster a month a go. We have had Chinese before and they lived to 4 and 3 with no major heath problems (they both died peacefully in their sleep). Last night I went to check on her and fill her food up as I do every night and she was lying on her side by her seesaw. We thought she was dead but when we picked her up he was still breathing. I read up on hibernation so spent over half hour holding her to gently wake her up. During this she would do a digging like movement every now and then. All of a sudden she started gasping for air. This is when I knew something was very wrong. I called the vets but they weren't much use (their "local" emergency vets is a just shy of an hour away). so called around to find a local emergency vets (there are only 2 out of 50 vets!), I got the money together and got to the car and she had a huge spasm and stopped breathing, it was obvious she'd passed away. We have always really looked after our animals so I am devastated and as she was so young I can't help thinking it was something I did and she was in pain. My husband said it was one of those things but it is really playing on my mind,

Re: Hamster died very suddenly
I'm sorry for your loss Daisy. It's hard to see them as they actually cross the bridge but be comforted by the fact that at this moment they are deeply unconcious and the movements you see are natural as the body relaxes down and they feel nothing.
It's normal to want to know why and to feel that we did something wrong. Most of us have been there and even with very old hamsters we still feel the what if I had done such and such pangs. You will likely never know. It was just her time and she was surrounded by love as she passed over and she will have felt that around her. With one so young it was most likely that she had something not quite right inside her and as she grew it gave out. All we can do is accept and know you did your best and her short life was filled with love. x

That is exactly how our sweet Ivy passed, on my lap and it is horrible. I wished I had not tried to wake her up, but I also know I would have always wondered if I should have tried. Hope you feel better soon. Big hug

Re: Hamster died very suddenly
How very sad and traumatic for you. I am so sorry. It is hard to see them suffer, but Souffle knows what she is talking about and it is unlikely your hamster was suffering by that time. She is playing over the rainbow bridge and pain free now, but you must miss her. Many pet shop hamsters are interbred and born with hidden genetic illnesses or problems that reveal themselves as they grow.
Hibernation is a bit of a misnoma - it is torpor really. It can occur if they get very cold. I think you would have known if it was this, particularly as you have had two hamsters before and no issues with torpor occurring.

Re: Hamster died very suddenly
I'm very sorry for your loss, Daisy. It's sadly all too common for hamsters to pass on unexpectedly when they are still young. A baby Syrian I had years ago passed in a similar manner and it was really upsetting, and we will never really know what happened and why. Take care of yourself and please don't blame yourself. x
