I'm so pleased the vet appointment went well, you have a great vet who sounds positive about Twinkie's recovery. It also helps that Twinkie is still active and a little fighter.
So made me smile reading about the porridge. Wishing her a quick recovery.

Hi, just a quick update. Twinkie was at the vet yesterday for a checkup and it's great news! She does indeed have a scab/callous forming now which of course is what we were hoping for, and the vet (it was a different one last night) says that she can come out for a run around the lounge for a few minutes too as she's going stir crazy in her cage! But strictly no climbing/no wheel/and no ball still. But that's fine - the change of scenery and being let out for a poke about the lounge will do her good. We don't have to go back for 2 weeks now, which is great, and she's still on daily pain relief. I've also cut down on the porridge/Ready Brek as she's ignoring her own food in favour of that, oops!

We let her out in the lounge for 10-15 mins last night and she was zipping about, enjoying her freedom! We probably won't let her out for any longer during the next 2 weeks as it's not worth undoing all the good work Twinkie has done to her leg for the sake of free-running around the carpet. But at least she is allowed out to have a stretch now she is healing well.

So great news! We're really chuffed .

Oh no. The poor little thing. That’s horrible.
I hope she can recover from this.

Hopefully she will make a complete recovery soon and can get back to her wheel.

So glad to hear the scar tissue is forming and supporting the leg now Get some loo rolls and full them with nuts / peanuts/seeds etc and wrap in paper. She will like chewing thise open. Get some of the sticks with seeds over them for her to chew. As I mentioned untorn sheets of tissue to rip up and cardboard chews and boxes to trash but not climb on. Place them upside down with the open bottom up so she cannot climb. she might like an egg box to chew up. Hide her food so she has to forage rather than bowl feeding.

Thank you everyone .

Twinkie actually scratched her head with her dodgy leg 2 days ago and seemed pleased with the results as she was off and running again when she'd done and didn't keep trying to scratch, so she obviously got the itch satisfactorily, haha. Which is a good sign! I've cut right down on the porridge/Ready Brek - if she has some it's a measured teaspoon full that I add milk to, but that's it.

Souffle, she does have what you suggested already in her cage oddly enough, all but an egg box. Sadly she does climb on top of her house but we can't take that away too as that's also her nest and it would upset her too much if we removed that as well I think, which wouldn't do her any good mentally - she's already confused at not having her wheel and limited time out and not climbing anything else.

But she's doing very well still, next check up is next week .

For hammies who climb on the roof to chew roof bars we put a tile over that area so they can't get their noses through the bars or get a grip to monkey bar. Good to hear she is using the foot nicely too
