Help with my Syrian
Hi all
I have a lovely Syrian female who is around the age of 2 (adopted, so guess is she is just 2 or is turning 2).
The past week or so her behaviour has changed. She moved her sleeping place and she seem spooked. She has also been a bit jittery when walking, at times, and can be reluctant to go down the ramp. This behaviour has been a bit on and off.
This evening she has a wet stomach and tail. I smelt it and it is clearly urine. She has been squeaking and is not asking to come out, which is unusual for her.
I am taking her to the vet tomorrow (hoping I can find one open on a Sunday with availability) but I am very worried and would appreciate it if anyone had any ideas on what it might be, so I can be prepared.

Re: Help with my Syrian
Sorry to hear your girl is struggling, it's hard to tell from your description of her behaviour whether something may have happened like a fall, or she could have had a stroke or it may just be she's having trouble getting around due to old age.
I hope you can get her to the vet today, meanwhile the important thing is to make her comfortable & keep everything with easy reach for her, rearrange the cage so everything she needs is on one level, keep food & water close to where she sleeps & give her plenty of shredded tissue to keep her warm in her nest.
Let us know how it goes at the vet.

Re: Help with my Syrian
Sorry for the late update!
I took her to the vet and they couldn't find anything wrong with her; no tumours, injuries etc.
They suggested a course of antibiotics, in case it was a kidney infection/UTI and she is back to her normal self!

Re: Help with my Syrian
Glad to hear she is back to her normal self Two is very old for a Syrian hamster. I would suggest lowering everything to floor/substrate level so she doesn't have any falls in her twilight years I did that with our last Syrian when he was about two. I didn't remove the levels completely - I raised them up very high and removed the ramps - so they still provided something overhead to sit under but he couldn't get up there to fall. They all vary though - if yours can still bar climb it might be better to just take the levels out. Ours could still zip around the floor of the cage really fast but he struggled with his back legs when climbing and it was too risky in case he fell over.
