Default URGENT: lethargic hybrid dwarf.

Hi all, I am asking on behalf of my friend.

Her female hybrind WW, Khaleesi, is acting lethargic every now and then. She runs on her wheel every so often but isn't as energetic as usual. She eats loads (more than her Syrian), and has recently been changed food brand (not sure which one) she appears to have put on weight, her fur is scruffy and her pouches are big and feels as though she has seeds in them, this is constant.

She has been heavy breathing and appeard that she would be passing away but her change in behaviors from that to acting normal is quite odd.

She said her room is warm all the time, so its not torpor.

Unfortunately she can't take her to a vet due to having no time. I might try take her for her but I won't be able to until Wednesday. This started since Thursday and I'm very worried for khaleesi.

I was wondering if she has impacted pouches could she clean them herself or is it best to take them to a vet? I don't know much about dwarves so I hope someone can shed some light on the situation. I was also thinking it may be diabetes, but why is her reaction so bad?

I really hope something can be done for her. She's only 8 months old.

It does sound like she needs a vet visit. Hope she is ok until Wednesday. Maybe you could phone the vet in advance and ask for some advice on managing her until then?

It does sound as her pouches could be impacted but I really think there's probably more than that going on & she really does need to see a vet to get checked out properly.
Fingers crossed she will be ok.

Hi Winnie. The stopping and starting of changed behaviour does seem to suggest something is bothering her. her breathing patterns suggest this too, one minute she`s okay and then she`s not.

Some hamster foods that contain whole oats or small seeds can sometimes `lodge` in the pouch and cause impaction or irritation. If you can gently feel the pouches to determine of one is full and the other isn`t, or she stops being able to eat or her behaviour doesn`t settle, I would definitely get to a vet to reduce any further complications. Really hope she`s okay. I`m sure if it does turn out to be impaction or something unrelated, the vet should be able to check her over regardless and listen to her chest. x

My first thought was hyPOglycemic. Wither from Diabetes or and internal infection only a vet can tell. The lethargy can be low sugar, or lack of proper sleep due to and impacted pouch. However I have had dwarf hamsters who just felt better storing their best liked foods in their pouch and not have any problem.

No matter which it is a Vet visit is a must so if you can help her out with that it will be the best option.
