aww so sorry.
some really good avice here.
my oscar is poorly and vet gave me a syringe to take anti biotics. he took the first dose but i had to make him take todays medicine. he started to bite the syringe. i know its not a lot to take but he needs to finish the course for 7 days. i think we just have to be forceful for once. for their own good.
maybe you could use meadow hay for his bedding as its natural and if swallowed wont effect him too badly. i use meadow hay and have not had a problem.
i hope hes ok.

What an ordeal for you and Jam. It was so good to hear he recovered and had a good and happy life. I have to give praise to P&H for paying your vets bills and a big poke in the eye for Rotostack. Its all to do with money and once they have yours they couldn't care less. I've always given mine shredded toilet paper. Half in their beds and half outside to find them something to do. P&H still sell the fluffy bedding. I saw some today when i went to fetch Carefresh for Dusty.

P&H still sell the fluffy bedding and it is actually labelled as "safe". My friend's hamster Marvin had to get a leg amputated after getting it tangled in fluffy bedding, it makes me so angry to see it still on shelves in pet shops

Oscar, Jam has sadly passed to the bridge now, but he did go on to live a long and happy life and become a huge nest builder with his safe bedding after his ordeal.

Pink Princess, I'm so sorry to hear about Marvin, yet another case of what this terrible stuff can do, it's a disgrace it's still available.

by 'fluffy bedding' are you talking about Rotastak's 'snug and cozy ultra soft animal bedding' (looks a bit like cotton wool)? Sometimes I give Herbie that as well as some blue and white shredded stuff I get from Wilkinson's... is this the stuff that is unsafe for hamsters?!

Anything that is similar to cotton wool is unsafe, it often feels like toy stuffing too?

Like BaileyandBeth said - anything thats similar to cotton wool or toy stuffing is unsafe, including the Rotastak stuff.

It was exactly that bedding that Jam was on, snug, cosy and deadly.

Exactly! Most people who buy it, and have had injured rodents from it probably didn't know the cause because they hadn't got enough knowledge or don't search for the cause, so they wouldn't think to report the illness/death to the company!

This thread is perfect for displaying the issues of fluffy bedding. If only every small animal owner had a look at this before buying the pet.
